Tarot Blog Hop: The Knight of Cups Sings His Heart Out

PREVIOUS BLOG | MASTER LIST | NEXT BLOG

Welcome to the Summer Solstice edition of the Tarot Blog Hop! I hope you are enjoying the longest day of the year if you too find yourself in the Northern Hemisphere. I love me some long summer nights, even though it actually doesn’t stay light out that late where I live in Tennessee since we’re right on the edge of Central Time. It’s all good! Someday I’d love to spend the Summer Solstice in Alaska or northern Norway to see the sun stay up, up, up above the horizon for days at a time. #goals!

To me, “The Things I Regret” is so the theme song for the Knight of Cups. First off, it has a jaunty beat that reminds me of the pace at which the Knight of Cups would ride his horse. It’s not too fast, not to slow, but constantly moving. It feels like a spirited trot, constantly seeking, constantly exploring, constantly idealizing. You can feel the movement and action and determination of the Knight energy in the music and in the voice of Brandi Carlile as she sings in her ever so earnest way.

Then come the lyrics which are all about love, longing, open-heartedness, romantic ideals dashed, heartbreak, and soul searching. The lyrics speak to me of the push and pull of the emotional landscape of the Knight of Cups. Love is the key to the deepest happiness but it is also the easiest way to fall into the blackest of despair. Love is destined, it is out of our hands, but it is also all our fault when it unravels. Love will set you free but it will also keep you trapped in an endless loop of doubts and regrets. Love is the only thing worth living for but it makes love unspeakable hard.

Here are the lyrics for you to read through so you can see what I’m talking about:

Knight of Cups
Rider Waite Smith deck

There’s a hole in my pocket where my dreams fell through,
From a sidewalk in the city to the avenue
There’s a leak in my dam ‘bout the size of a pin,
And I can’t quite remember where the water’s getting in

But when you’re wearing on your sleeve,
All the things you regret,
You can only remember what you want to forget
You feel it tugging at your heart,
Like the stars overhead,
‘Til you rest your bones on the killing bed

Let them roll over me.
Let them roll over me,
When I doubt you
Let them roll over me.
Let them roll over me,
When I doubt you

Knight of Cups
Shadowscapes Tarot

With the weight of the world resting on my back,
And the road on which I’ve traveled is as long as it is cracked
But I keep pressing forward with my feet to the ground,
For a heart that is broken makes a beautiful sound

But when you’re wearing on your sleeve,
All the things you regret,
You can only remember what you want to forget

Let them roll over me
Let them roll over me,
When I doubt you.
Let them roll over me
Let them roll over me,
When I doubt you

Knight of Cups
Linestrider Tarot

I walk through my days like a ghost in a dream,
But the field carries on and my past follows me
It’s hard moving on from the things you done wrong,
When they play in your head like an old fashioned song

But when you’re wearing on your sleeve,
All the things you regret,
You can only remember what you want to forget

Lonely miles,
Without you

Lonely miles,
Without youLet the ground keep my bones
Let the water be my home
Let the dust hold my soul,
                                                              Like a holy rolling stone

You’ll notice there are quite a few references to water in this song, which reminds me of the suit of Cups representing the Water element. The water is his home and his emotions are a leaky dam. There is so much emotion and water in here, and it isn’t the kind of mature, self-assured emotions you would expect from a Queen of a King. It also isn’t that fresh and trusting emotional naiveté of a Page. Here we are somewhere in the middle of learning about love and feelings and getting our hearts trampled but also not being the best of partners. We all can relate to these growing pains, hopefully learning from our mistakes and responding differently next time we experience challenges.

There is hope in the Knight of Cups. He will “keep pressing forward with my feet to the ground” even though it’s lonely and miserable, disorienting and seemingly endless work. That’s life! That’s love! There’s not much we can do about it but keep trying. Through it all is a sense of the deep beauty of love, “for a heart that is broken, makes a beautiful sound.” That is just the kind of romantic language that the Knight of Cups would spout out to a friend over a few drinks at the bar. That friend is probably a songwriter who will turn that heartache into something as beautiful as this song.

Okay, that’s enough of my song analysis 🙂 I hope you are enjoying the Tarot Blog Hop and hop along to the next post, or go backwards, it’s all in the fun of the thing!  Happy Summer Solstice!!

Reflections on the Archetype of Strength

I picked Strength as my word of the year for 2018. It is more than just a word to me though, it is a whole archetype. It contains so much more than just one word or idea. Today, I’m going to write a little bit about what I think Strength means, how I’m working with it this year, and how you too can draw on the energy of Strength when you need a boost of energy, confidence, and stamina.

Shadowscapes Tarot

First and foremost, working with Strength for me is about building confidence. Strength is an energy that you can channel to prop yourself up when you need confidence, courage, and stamina. I know I often need more of that type of energy in my life. It is so easy to feel overwhelmed, anxious, and exhausted. Calling on Strength reminds me that I have deep reserves of inner fortitude, and that I can endure my challenges. In fact, I can do more than endure my challenges, I can blossom, grow, and build myself up throughout the process of confronting obstacles, roadblocks, and setbacks in my path.

Strength is also about perseverance and fortitude. It is the ability to just keep going even when I am worn out, struggling, or just plain tired to the bone. I have deep reserves of energy meant specifically for the areas of my life that are most important to me. If I really want something, if it really lights me up inside and gives me purpose, I will find a way to make myself keep going and strive. It’s easy to pinpoint the things that aren’t part of my life purpose, because there is just no energy or perseverance for completing them. When I don’t follow through on these things, I don’t feel deeply unsatisfied and disappointed. When something doesn’t get done and it doesn’t show up again at another time for a second chance at tackling it, it just wasn’t part of my ultimate path.

Strength means I don’t give up when things get tough, instead I dig deep and I find deeper answers and meaning because of that struggle and exhaustion. We are all trying to avoid pain and suffering, isn’t that only natural? But what else is natural is the meaning and purpose we derive from pushing through and doing the hard and difficult things that make us so uncomfortable. It’s in the pain and discomfort and feat that the story of purpose unfolds. When we are channeling Strength it’s easier to hear those messages of meaning. When we  ask Strength for assistance on something that doesn’t actually resonate with our soul purpose, Strength just kind of ignores us and no surge of endurance emerges to allow us to keep going. Working with Strength is working with our intuition.

Sometimes we do breakdown though. Sometimes we reach exhaustion, we fail, we shut down, we go into overdrive and burn out. In that moment, there is also a profound connection to Strength. Life tests us in excruciating ways simply to connect us to that extraordinary Strength we each hold within ourselves. It’s painful but it’s not wrong and we don’t have to suffer through it. We can lean into the pain, wrapped in the knowledge of our Strength, knowing we’ll pull through. This isn’t the end, it is simply a resting point.

Strength is not brute forth, it is endurance, it is the long run, it creates energy even as we are on our last legs, propelling us just a few steps farther. Strength is the tortoise, not the hare. Strength may even appear to crumple or stop or stagnate but she is just resting, and the resting point is crucial and beautiful. There is a subtle growth in the rest that indicates almost inpercetible continuation of movement. You can still feel that movement within you if you tune into that enduring vibration of Strength that is always pulsing in your center.

The Wild Unknown Tarot

Strength is also about control, aware of creating her life in collaboration with Fate. Fate is not running the show, but rather works in harmony with our shifting interpretations and perceptions of our reality. Strength allows you to be conscious and awake to the reactions you have to Fate. You can decide how you interpret and live in life’s troubles and problems. Strength allows you to choose your own reality, to decide how to react to the world around you. When life gives you lemons, do you make lemonade? Do you look for the silver lining? Do you treat misfortune as an opportunity to learn something, a lesson buried within? Strength allows you to entertain the prospect that everything happens for a reason. She also allows you to accept that you’ll probably never know that reason and just have to believe and have faith.

Strength is acceptance but she is also your internal badass who totally has your back, massaging your shoulders in the corner of the ring, “Now go out there and fight!” Most of the fight is just against yourself, the little voice of doubt in your head, “You are bad at this. You have nothing to offer. No one will understand you. People will misunderstand, misinterpret, and twist your words and then BLAME you for their mistakes. You will cause mistakes. You are not good enough.” Blah, blah, blah! That little voice could go on for days but Strength is the angel on your shoulder whispering that, “You are good enough. You are worthy. Your uniqueness is a gift. You can grow. You are ready. We are all one. People want to hear from you. You can do it.” She is really good at being the cheerleader and being the coach.

I have many more things I could say about Strength, but that is going to be all for today 🙂 I hope you connect deeply with your inner Strength whenever you need it! Did you pick a word of the year? Care to share?

Allowing Yourself to Soar with the Page of Swords

You are the Page of Swords, bursting with ideas and thoughts, ready to take flight and soar to great heights of understanding. At the same time, you know that you must start where you are at now. You can’t skip ahead to a time when you know everything, you must first go through the learning process of gaining wisdom, little by little, day by day. Sometimes you will make progress in fits in starts, sometimes you will backtrack, sometimes you will go astray. The Page of Swords calls that a thrill, sees it as the facts of reality, and continues on undaunted, always active mentally and sharping that wit…

Key West, Florida, USA

Keywords: mentally active, talkative, communicative, curious, questioning, exploring, acting out thoughts, enthusiastic

Reversed:  unsure of thoughts, doubtful, anxious, worried, uncommunicative, distant, unwilling to learn, shy, reserved

The Page of Swords carries is an enthusiastic, vibrant energy of openness to ideas and the willingness to act on those ideas. This card may represent you in the reading, or it could be a person that is influencing your life at this time. The Page of Swords knows how to soar, to pick up on a thought or an idea and take off with it. There is a freshness and a newness to your thoughts at this time that makes you want to just fly away with them and see where they take you. It’s almost guileless and innocent, this quest to figure things out and explore new concepts and constructs. You are willing to allow various updrafts and errant winds to push you hither and thither and can actually enjoy a measure of uncertainty when it comes to a final destination.

You have this conception that you are doing a good job of learning your lessons and can therefore integrate each piece of knowledge you accumulate into your life as you go. Each piece of the puzzle you uncover adds depth of understanding to your life. This process of learning and integrating is challenging but fun for you. As each new idea is fleshed out and processed and analyzed, you come into greater wisdom that you can apply to your life situation. It feels like your life is expanding and you can see a larger part of the whole.

It’s not all clear sailing though, as there are many things left to learn and clouds that will get in your way. You can’t quite see everything you want to see, and this inability to grasp the entire picture can be frustrating. There is a tension of impatience and wanting to get on with it already. The temptation to fly higher than you are ready to is tempting and can get you into situations which are way over your head at this point. It can be difficult to start where you are at, but that is really the only way to learn. There is no shame in not understanding or being able to do something that it has taken your teachers a long time to master. You can be the pupil now, you can let someone else be the master.

The Page of Swords loves to communicate. Now is a great time to write and speak more with the new people you meet. You can also start sharing your new ideas with people you already know, or decide to start communicating differently. Perhaps in the past you haven’t be very forthcoming or articulate when it comes to talking to other people about what is in or on your mind. This could be a great time to shake up that scenario and start to open yourself to sharing. This can also be applied to networking. Oftentimes, we need to get out fresh ideas in front of the right people at the right time. The Page of Swords energy boosts you up to express yourself and start talking up your ideas out in public.

Page of Swords reversed:
When you draw this card in the reversed orientation, it can show that you are feeling a bit closed off from possibility. You may even be falling into the trap of thinking that everything is impossible, you’re stuck, that there is no way forward. When you direct your energy inward with the Page of Swords reversed, you finds fault with logic and ways of thinking. You figure that since you does know one thing, than you can deduce nothing from your situation. When the Page of Swords reversed allows for nothing besides the idea that all thoughts are shallow, unformed, and wrong, you get quite down about the state of your mental affairs. You can’t move forward with the kind of openness and willingness to explore that is in your best interest at this time.

Right now, you think that you need to know more before you can take action. You have too much to learn and are overwhelmed with the process and the mountain of things you need to know before you will be “ready”. You think it’s desirable to stay in your comfort zone of what little you do know, and not take any risks to go out exploring. This is akin to a bird staying on the ground because it has never flown before. Remember that you have wings, remember that your brain is capable of learning so much more, remember that you have to jump and free fall before you can figure out the next step. That is your nature as a human. That is your reality. It’s imperative that you push yourself to try harder when you see the Page of Swords reversed in a reading. Your current mode is to stay safe, but not pushing yourself won’t get you to your goal.

The reversed Page of Swords may be a person in your life that you desperately want to help to take flight. She or he seems so stuck and you’re willing to take those necessary steps in order for her/him to grow. You’ll do the hard work in order to nurture and protect this gentle soul. That’s not how it works, though! Your special person has to do the work, has to make the effort, has to leave the old comfort zone. You can’t grow for someone else. You have to stand back and let that person learn and understand on his/her own terms and in his/her own time.

Going the Distance: 5 Tarot Card for a Happy Marriage

Love, love, love! Okay, you may have noticed that it is not February anymore, the month of love. So sorry, I never seem to end up blogging as much as I intend to in a given month. The good news is that there is no end to the ideas and topics I have for blog posts, so even if I don’t write a bunch to share with you every month, I will never stop sputtering them out every now and again. Love is love, and it is a wonderful thing to think about and read about any month of the year. Am I right?!

I hear a lot of advice about the importance of consistency when blogging. It helps your audience know what’s coming and stick around to read on a regular basis. I just want to let you know that I appreciate you, even if I don’t blog consistently, and for everyone who hangs around regardless of my blog release schedule, I love you! I do send out my newsletter consistently each New Moon, so sign up for that!

Now, let’s talk about the tarot cards that show in up a reading for those long term relationships that end up culminating in a blissful union!

Rider Waite Smith Tarot: IV of Wands, III of Cups, The Lovers, The World, X of Cups

First off, I’ve chosen the IV of Wands. This card is about milestones, those big, life-defining events that come around and rock your world every once in a while. What would you call getting married besides a momentous milestone?! I love seeing the IV of Wands show up in a reading anytime, as it is such a celebratory and joyful card, but when you’re looking for information or advice about a relationship, pulling this card will surely put a smile upon a reader’s face. In the image above from the Rider Waite Smith tarot, we see two lavishly dressed and decorated people, cheering you to come join them under four Wands which look like a traditional Jewish wedding chuppah. The imagery itself is suggestive of a wedding and that is always a good sign if you’re wondering whether it’s time to pop the question.

IV of Wands Shadowscapes Tarot

The IV of Wands also stands for harmony within a union, meaning that two people will come together to form a beautiful blend of complementary attributes. This will be a peaceful and loving relationship, bringing you a sense of tranquility that the search is over and you can transition into a new phase of your life. The IV number shows that this relationship is one in which you can build a stable home, a home where you can express yourself freely and each grow as individuals, as well as grow as a couple. There will be acceptance and space given when changes occur, because we all are changing every day and that is a wonderful thing to share with another human being. In the beginning of a marriage, it is a great time to acknowledge and discuss this fact of constant development and growth. Make a pact that you each will be constant and stable for each other, while still allowing that you each will be different people as the relationship and time progresses.

Next up we have the III of Cups, which in the Rider Waite Smith deck above shows a trio of merry women toasting their Cups of love while dancing. This looks like the kind of wedding I would like to be at! There are deep emotions with the Cups cards, and the building of a solid foundation with the 3 aspect. At a wedding the happy new couple shares food and drink with all their guests as a symbol of the bounty of their union. This card comes up when you’re planning a lavish wedding, or even a simple supper, but definitely an event where everyone walks away with full bellies and happy hearts. It will be a day when people can put their troubles aside and focus on all the happiness and love that life has to offer. This a positive and lovely card to draw as you plan a ceremony and reception that will leave you, your partner, and everyone in attendance in a state of harmony and joy.

III of Cups Wild Unknown Tarot

The III of Cups represents a union at which friends and family come together to form a larger unit. There is community building and sharing, aspects of any marriage at which two families are brought together to create one family. Friendship groups will also be joined, which nowadays can be almost more important than the bringing together of families. When you marry a person, you marry their whole family and community. The III of Cups shows that circle of people surrounding your union and blessing it with their love and acceptance. It is also a reminder to always find the fun in your relationship. As you spend the rest of your lives together, think back to the excitement of your wedding and keep that memory of good times, dancing, and celebrating near to your heart.

Of course, I have to include The Lovers in the list of tarot cards that signify a wedding or other sacred celebration. The Lovers is the ultimate card of union, the joining of opposites, and the combining of values. In any marriage you want to feel like you are channeling the energy of The Lovers on your wedding day. Many people get married in June, the 6th month of the year, which corresponds with card VI The Lovers. There is an energy of combining and aligning with this card. It is important to know what your own personal values are as an individual and then to explore and question whether your personal belief system is able to combined with the personal belief system of another person. You’re committing to taking life’s journey with another person and will need to make choices as a unit to live that journey together. Hopefully, you did all of that exploration while you were dating and now that the marriage is imminent you have a sense of peace and excitement that your shared values will carry you forward throughout your marriage.

The Lovers
Linestrider Tarot

The Lovers is also about passion and romance, so it is a wonderful card to see for a wedding because it is not only about true love, but also romantic and sexual compatibility. Your attraction goes beyond lust and gratification and takes on the deeper level of soul fulfillment. Our soul’s have these human bodies for a reason and a marriage promises to fulfill that sexual need throughout your life.

Love is the recognition of oneness in a world of separation. It is so hard for us to see that we are all made of the same stuff and we’re all connected as one. Love makes it easy to see that connection, to feel oneness with another human being, and to tear down the walls of separation that are constructions of our egoic minds. The Lovers is symbolic of physical as well as emotional unity and it is THE card you want to see when you’re considering an upcoming marriage proposal or wedding.

Next up we have The World, which is a card of culmination. The World indicates the space between an ending and a beginning when everything is connecting and finishing, while simultaneously recycling and starting anew. A marriage is the end of a courtship, the climax of a romance that has lead to this point when two people decide they want to spend the rest of their lives together. It is also the beginning of a new chapter in that romance, when they begin the cycle of growth together again. Marriage is an example of one of life’s most beautiful cycles, one that most of look forward to experiencing.

Rider Waite Smith tarot

There is a deep sense of accomplishment with The World. Finding your person, falling in love, and committing to a lifetime together was quite a task. Now you can celebrate and rejoice, dance as the woman in Rider Waite Smith deck does in her wreath in the sky. You envisioned this happy time and now it is finally here. Try to be present and appreciate your wedding, if you can 🙂 You may find that you feel more whole, more complete, and that you understand your place in the world a little bit better. Your marriage provides wholeness with your spouse but also with your combined families joining into something greater. Lastly, The World is a sign that a honeymoon abroad could be in the works as this can be a card about world travel. Make sure your passport is current!

The last card I have to suggest that denotes a happy marriage when it comes up in a reading is the X of Cups. This is the happily ever after card. In the Rider Waite Smith depiction we see two figures holding each other and gazing at a rainbow of Cups in the sky, in front of them dance their children in the pasture by their lovely little home. This is the white picket fence, the 2 kids (a boy and a girl, of course!), the perfect home, the sharing of emotions and love. This is what we imagine marriage will be like when we are growing up and dreaming about falling in love. It can be a sign that you are seeing the world with rose-tinted glasses, so a little reality check might be in order. You aren’t just imagining all of this happiness, are you!?

Rider Waite Smith tarot

I don’t want this introspection to come across as a buzzkill, but rather as an opportunity to explore all the feelings you are having about and with your partner. Sit down and have this dream together, envision your happiest future, share your wildest dreams. This mutual sharing can create a strong and lasting bond as you near your wedding knowing that you have a mutual vision of your future together. When your values are in alignment, you will be able to act in loving support and appreciation of your spouse. The X of Cups suggests you do the work of aligning your visions, connecting your hearts, and making a real life together. Now is the perfect time to indulge in some fantasy about how you can continue to love and support each other the rest of your days!

I hope you enjoyed this little exploration into 5 tarot cards that I think indicate a happy marriage in the works, when they come up in a reading. What cards do you think of when you imagine the perfect cards to draw for a happy marriage?

Are We Falling in Love?: 5 Tarot Cards for New Love

Happy February! The month of love! It’s a slow month for greeting card and candy companies so they came together to create a little holiday called Valentines’ Day. It’s a glorious day when we’re obligated to show our special someone affection with cloyingly sweet poems and sugar confections. And don’t forget the flowers! Maybe you can pick up on my slightly mocking tone, as I’m a firm believer that every day is a wonderful day to show love, appreciation, and affection for the people in your life that deserve it (and they all do!). Although I might not approve of corporations co-opting the best of human emotions in order to sell things, all the same, I’m going to spend some time this February writing about love and relationships and how these themes come up in the tarot.

I believe that tarot reflects all human emotions and experiences in its 78 cards. How this is possible, I don’t know. It’s amazing! It’s magic! Today, I’ve picked five cards that represent new love. When I see these cards in a reading, especially a reading focused on love and relationships, I get a little tingle that things are going well in the love department for this person. If all five came up I would be completely astounded, but even just one or two is a great sign that things are progressing well. If love between people interested in having a romantic relationship is what your reading is focused on, these are the cards you want to see.

Of course, these aren’t the only cards that are indicative of a new love or a relationship that has lasting and loving potential. I’m just picking cards for fun here, to introduce some light and love into our February. I’m also going to write more than one post about love this February, and I refrained from repeating cards in these different love posts. So while it would certainly be great to get The Lovers in any card about relationships, I’m only going to write about that particular card once during this February series. That’s just me giving more cards a chance to show their lovey dovey side.

Okay, introductions have been made, now let’s move onto to my picks for the top five tarot cards for new love. Swoon!

Rider Waite Smith Tarot: Page of Cups, Ace of Cups, Knight of Cups, II of Cups, IX of Cups

Did you notice that I picked all cards from the suit of Cups for new love?  Sure, there is emotion and love in all of the other suits of the tarot deck as well, but something about new love had me concentrating hard on the demonstrative emotions present in cards of the Cups suit. There isn’t a ton of nuance to a fresh relationship. As much as you’d like to say that there are rational reasons why you’re falling in love with someone, really you know that if you don’t feel those butterflies in your stomach and that thrill down your spine, it’s not quite what you were hoping for or expecting. It might not even feel real or good enough if you’re heart doesn’t skip a beat at the sight of your lover in a crowd, or your finger shake with anticipation as you swipe to open the latest text message. So I chose five Cups cards to evoke that newness in a relationship when you’ve got all the feels.

The Wild Unknown Tarot

Okay, my first pick for a tarot card that represents new love, falling in love, or the beginning of a relationship is the Page of Cups. The Pages in the tarot deck are messengers and the Cups represent the Water realm of the emotions. So, the Page of Cups brings you messages from the emotions, and he really likes to be the bearer of happy news. He’s here to say, “This one’s a keeper. This one you could really fall in love with for good. There’s potential for a deeper connection from the vibes I’m picking up.” He holds out his Cup as if he wants to have a toast to celebrate the messages of love that he brings you. He’s supper happy to be a part of the whole set up. If you’re waiting to be asked out on that first date, or told that someone has a little crush on you, this card is a good indication that you’re going to get the message soon.

The Page of Cups enjoys flirting, getting to know you, romance, love, and joy. This energy is great for first dates, and the beginning of a relationship when you’re trying to put your best foot forward, but still be authentic to yourself. You will have the ability to project your best self, because you will truthfully feel worthy of love with the Page of Cups energy coursing through you. This Page is happy-go-lucky,  playful, and exuberant. You’ll be able to enjoy spontaneous moments of connections and share yourself without restraint. He is also new and innocent in a way. When the Page of Cups shows up in a new love reading, you might be ready and willing to leave your past behind, put down any relationship baggage that doesn’t represent you and your highest self, and then align your energy to now resonate at that higher level that is your inner truth.

Next up in my top picks for new love is the Ace of Cups. The Aces, like the Pages, stand for new beginnings. Any Ace would be great as indicator for a new relationship, but once again, Cups are all about emotions and we’re talking about love today, folks, so the Ace of Cups is a great new beginning in the realm of the heart. Aces also represent the essence of a suit, so the very essence of the Cups suit is love and compassion. It is the fulfillment of the heart’s deepest desires. It is the overflowing wellspring of emotion that one often feels at the beginning of a relationship when you are just so happy, thankful, overwhelmed, and enamored with the one you have finally found.

Linestrider Tarot

If you haven’t found anyone yet to share a love connection with, this is a great card to get in alignment with in order to bring that love into your life. Channeling the open and abundant energy of the Ace of Cups attracts love to you, as like attracts like. When you are feeling love, love is what you will get more of in your life. It is so very necessary to first have self-love before you go about giving and receiving love from another person. The Ace of Cups invites you to love who you are on a soul level, heart level, mental level, and physical level. The more success you have with this inner work of self love, the easier, more natural, and quicker will come the ability to connect with others in that same manner. When you see the Ace of Cups in a reading, it’s a wonderful time to get into the deep emotion of love at it’s core essence.

Shadowscapes Tarot

Along comes the Knight of Cups, as my next pick for a great indicator of a love connection in a reading. The Knight of Cups is the great romantic of the tarot deck. He loves to be in love. “All the feels” is his comfort zone. This card is more likely to show up when you’re already dating someone, have decided to you’re into each other, and are now feeling ready and willing to be intimate and romantic. This is the Valentine’s Day energy of chocolate and flowers, candlelit dinners, weekends away in the country with rose petals on the bed. There’s an air of seduction around the Knight of Cups, a sexy energy that you may feel like embodying to wow your partner. Or you could now be interested in allowing yourself to open up and share more deeply with the one you’re dating these days.

The Knight of Cups is also a messenger, like the Page of Cups, but brings slightly more prestigious or important messages. If you’re waiting to hear the “L word” from your (hopefully) lover, or have a big conversation about “where this is all going,” this is the card you want to see for a positive confirmation that the feelings of love are mutual. Now is the right time to get real about sharing your feelings, listen to what your partner has to say, and take your relationship to the next level. The Knight of Cups will sweep you off your feet with swoon-worthy romantic gestures, straight out of a movie. You could find yourself making these grand gestures or be the recipient of a 100 red roses, either way, love is in the air and it feels wonderful!

Le Tarot des Femmes Erotiques- II of Cups

Do I even need to explain the II of Cups? I mean, look at it! In the image from artist Pamela Coleman Smith above, we see two figures exchanging or sharing their Cups of emotions. They look seriously into each other, and are blessed from above by the winged lion of passion, and a caduceus of healing and balance. This depicts the idea that a new love is the coming together of opposites, the joining of binary energy to create oneness. This is the beauty of two becoming one (excuse the Spice Girls reference). I like the art of Pamela Coleman Smith because the people she draws defy typical gender norms, especially if you’re willing to suspend the idea that men wear pants and women wear dresses. You can do it! It isn’t just about a man and woman coming together, as opposites genders attract. It is beyond that, the idea that two people can be connected and understand their oneness with all of creation through the small experience of just the two of them sharing oneness.

Perhaps all of that is a bit deep for new love, but really, what is love besides the recognition of oneness in a binary world? We all crave love because we understand on an unconscious, fundamental level that we are all one, made of the same energy, and it is only our senses that separate us. The II of Cups hints at that oneness. The II of Cups is about kindness, togetherness, gentleness. It’s that fresh start of love when you are on your best behavior naturally, showing the true essence of your kind and simple nature. There is a lot of potential for even deeper connection when the II of Cups appears in a reading. This new love that you are experiencing now may be the start of something long lasting.

Shadowscapes Tarot

The last card I picked to represent new love is the IX of Cups. This is the card of wishes come true. The fat and happy little man above is content and smug with all of his many Cups lined up behind him. This is the feeling you get when you wish upon every star to find a companion who listens to you and truly sees you and then you find that person! It’s like you can hardly believe your good luck. It might feel like luck, so there can be a little prickle of doubt that you don’t deserve this happiness, but do not go down that road. You need to be focused on how well everything is working out for you, and don’t give doubt the time of day. You’ve hit the jackpot! Maybe you made a long list of attributes that you wished to find in a lover and they all walked in the door in one package and you just feel so goddamn good about it.

And you should feel good because you deserve this happiness! The IX of Cups shows up when you’ve been putting in the effort. You’ve worked on your self love, you’ve explored and probed for what you want in a relationship, you’ve asked the Universe for this person, and you’ve acted as if it was happening for so long that it is actually happening. This is a culmination of all that hard work. This is your reward and you can now be satisfied and content with the love you have attracted into your life by putting out all those love vibes everywhere you went. This is just the beginning, remember that, but still enjoy the shit out of these moments of new found love. These are the memories you are going to turn back to again and again with that blissful smile of nostalgia for new love. It’s time to have your cake and eat it too!

Okay, that’s it for today. It’s a fun exercise to go through your deck and pick your top five love cards (or top five whatever cards!).  If you’re in the mood to play with your tarot deck, let me know what you would pick for this exercise! I would love to hear from you 🙂  Happy February, month of LOVE! I hope to be back super soon with another top five about the next layer of the love parade, my top five cards for choosing your life partner and getting hitched!

Allowing 2018 to be the Year of The High Priestess

2018 is the Year of the High Priestess! What is a tarot year card? It’s a simple numerological association created from adding up the numbers of the current year. Here’s how I figured it out for this year:  2+0+1+8= 11, which reduces to 1+1= 2. The number 2 is represented by The High Priestess in the tarot deck. I like to think about the energy of the year card and how that might apply to my year ahead. Below is a write up of what to expect during a year of The High Priestess.

Shadowscapes Tarot

A year of The High Priestess is one during which you connect to your calm inner center, you develop your intuition, and you learn about the power of being.  One of the easiest ways to understand the nature of The High Priestess is through comparison to The Magician. The Magician is card 1 in the 9-year life cycle and it is the card energy you were experiencing last year. In this world of duality in which we live, The Magician and The High Priestess are opposite sides of the same coin, they are two aspects of yourself which are necessary and supportive. The Magician has an outward focus, while The High Priestess points you inward.  The Magician physically senses reality, while The High Priestess uses her intuition. The Magician is about action and doing, while The High Priestess emphases the non-action of being.  The Magician is lightness, masculine, and assertive.  The High Priestess is shadow, feminine, and passive.

Comparison assists with interpreting the energy of The High Priestess because so many of her characteristics are considered inferior in our culture.  What you can learn during a High Priestess year is how necessary and useful these qualities are, though.  Both lightness and shadow are wholly needed to make up reality and your personal identity. The Magician and The High Priestess are the basis upon which reality is created and perceived by us humans, they are the foundation of existence.  They perfectly illustrate balance and duality.  During a High Priestess year you will become more deeply connected to that balance, delving into the dark side where calm, stillness, and being are just as powerful as effort, action, and doing.

So what does calm mean to The High Priestess? It is a slowing down to a halt. You will feel a deep need to quiet the mind this year and this need will be more easily met than in other years of your life. It will flow.  Not only will you want to sit quietly more often, you will also make the time to do it. One of the easiest ways to connect to your calm inner center is to stop moving. Spend time with your body without moving anything but your breath. Focus on this smallest of actions, most important for life. We breathe automatically, but we can also breathe purposefully. It is not like the beating of the heart, which we have no control over. The way we breathe is adjustable and the adjustments we make to that breathe can bring incredible results. Breath can be healing, it can be soothing, it can be invigorating, and it can be meditative. Bringing yourself in touch with The High Priestess is as easy as counting three deep breathes before you act. This is connection to calm and to stillness first, instead of immediate impulse reaction.

Rider Waite Smith

Channeling The High Priestess can also begin in the mind, just as well as by connection to the body through breathe. When your thoughts are a swirl of “Go! Do! Make!” take note of that frenetic energy in your mind. Watch your thoughts as an outsider instead of being caught up in the middle of the frenzy. Can you step outside of your thoughts and allow yourself a break?  A guided visualization or meditation can give you something to focus on that isn’t your thoughts. You can also try some counting of your deep breaths or reciting a mantra or affirmation.  Try something as simple as “I am not thinking right now, I am giving myself a rest.” The place you reach through this non-action of being is your calm inner center.  From your calm inner center you can make decisions and figure out how to take action without thinking or doing anything.

What you are listening to in your calm inner center is your intuition and your subconscious. The High Priestess teaches that there is more to the world and life than solely what meets the eye. The five senses are limited.  See, touch, taste, smell, and hear- this is how you perceive reality. But what about all that you can’t observe? There are energy fields around us that scientists can only detect with highly advanced scientific devices. But do you need a magnetometer to sense energy fields or can you tap into your built in intuition?  You will be able to sense these energies more acutely this year. Do not discount it just because you cannot see it. Listen to subtle signs you receive from the Universe that lead you down your life path. This is listening to your inner wisdom, your inherent knowing.

The High Priestess points out the way to this knowing, this accessing of your subconscious. She beckons you to listen, to open to the shadow side of reality that you tend to ignore and deny as you busy yourself getting on with the everyday mundane tasks of life. Using the subconscious, this inner knowing, this sixth sense opens you up to greater awareness this year. Things are not only what they appear. There is more. There are layers beneath the surface. There is space, so much space, between all of the molecules that make up our reality.  When you become aware of all that you do not know, you gain perspective and the ability to interpret the world more effectively. Acknowledge all that you do know about a situation and all that you cannot know at this time in order to make decisions.

Awareness of layers and space brings not only deeper understanding of life, but it also brings us together as people. We can be more compassionate towards each other when we break ourselves down and apart into the tiniest pieces possible and recognize that those things are all the same and therefore equal. This creates a feeling of interconnection that is super accessible to you during a High Priestess year. The concept of compassion and interconnection is often associated with the feminine. This is a year to get in touch with your feminine side, with the aspects of inner confidence, loving connection, and faith.

The Wild Unknown

There is something timeless and eternal about The High Priestess.  The High Priestess commands the subtle directive to go way back into the farthest reaches of time, back to the beginning of the earth, back to the question of what we are and why we exist.  This year carries messages from the past but really those messages are from outside of time.  The High Priestess does not subscribe to the concept of time in the same way our society does, so knowledge exists without the constraints of time. You can learn from the past, the present and the future all at once this year.  This kind of thinking may cause you to feel a bit more philosophical than usual this year.  There is knowledge and wisdom that just exists within you, and you can access that wisdom place more gently and easily this year.

One way to connect and get in tune with that wisdom of The High Priestess is to get out and explore nature. Isn’t it easier to feel the vibrational energy of this world when you are out surrounded by nature then when you are in your living room or out in the city? You can practice connecting to your inner High Priestess by contemplating, communing with, or contacting your favorite tree, garden, mountain or lake, etc. The respect and appreciation you show to nature tells the Earth that you love being here. It shows that you care for all of the Earth’s creatures and creations, including yourself. Communing with and thinking about the size and shape of the Earth also expands your reality, a key aspect of The High Priestess.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the modern world, the day-to-day grind of your everyday existence. Often, this business leads us far from stillness. All day long at work or with your family and friends, you are thinking and doing. It’s time to take a break and not think about anything for a little while. Can you focus on just your breathe, coming in and out of your body?  Take a moment to remind yourself, as frequently as possible because you will forget it every second, that there is more to life than what meets the eye. I remind you again: there is more to life that what you can perceive. There is a purpose here. Do you know what it is? The High Priestess asks: are you working towards your soul purpose?

Take some time out from rushing, doing, hurrying, getting things done, action, noise, distractions, tv, social media, facts. Take a moment for being. When you wake up in the morning, instead of checking your email first thing, check in with yourself. How does your body feel? What is your emotional state?  Ask yourself if you are disconnected, out of touch, switched off from your soul purpose. If so, how can you reconnect and realign yourself with that divinity you know in your heart? Go to the quiet place inside of you that you can reach at any time from any location. Look within to your calm inner center. Go there.

You may find the energy of The High Priestess somewhat disorienting and jarring. When you quiet the voice in your head, you may be confronted with a view of space and time that is open and scary. You may lose some of your illusions about right and wrong, up and down, past and future. Perhaps there is just a vast see of nothing waiting for you in your calm inner center and that is an uncomfortable and unwelcome feeling for you. You may have a strong desire to deny yourself this stillness, to try and skirt away and evade your passive, feminine, shadow side. Remember, that this is your super power this year but it is also your undeniable lot. If you can’t go within of your own volition now, you may be forced by outside circumstances. Surrender is not easy and can reveal truths that you are trying to hide from yourself. Be ready for things that are buried to pop up this year, possibly out of the blue, and demand to be dealt with and overcome.

Allowing the dark, passive, feminine, shadow side of life to emerge, educate, and expand you is possible and necessary this year. This is the counterpoint that balances out the bright, active, masculine, conscious aspects of you. We each contain both sides. This is a world of duality, in which we cannot comprehend anything except through the experience of its opposite.  You must know the dark to live in the light. You must be still in order to figure out how to act. This is a wonderful year to stop and contemplate these ideas, to get comfortable with them, and see where The High Priestess leads you in this part of your life cycle. I wish you well in this 2 year!

Some Action Steps for A High Priestess Year:

  • Connect with yourself physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Take a moment to meditate and tune into your personal energetic vibration.  What does it feel like to be still and connected to your body, mind, heart, and soul?  Give it a try!
  • Create a physical representation of your calm inner center. You could go to a place that makes you feel connected to your center. You could make a collage or draw a picture of this place. For example, I like to visualize an actual place I’ve been to that made me feel magical. Basically, think of your happy place of calm and then try and bring that place into this physical realm.
  • Write down your feelings on the energy of The High Priestess at the beginning of your new year of life. What does the information here about what to expect during a High Priestess year make you think and feel? Are you excited?  Unimpressed? Nervous? Worried? Skeptical?  Pumped?
  • Write down your desires, passions, enthusiasms, inspirations, and wishes at the beginning of this year. What do you want to question or reexamine this year? What do you want to accomplish with the added strength of The High Priestess?
  • Schedule in time to be peaceful.  Sit quietly.  Do nothing.  If you just keep skipping personally scheduled quiet time, try joining a meditation or yoga class.  Paying for the class and telling others that you will be there helps with your accountability. Even going once a month could be a huge improvement in your mental health if you can fully immerse yourself in stillness.
  • Go on a long hike, or spend a day out in a quiet natural place as often as you can. Don’t bring anything to do if you can manage it. Spend a least a little while without multitasking to just be in this beautiful nature setting, giving thanks to the Earth
  • Connect with the moon cycles this year. The High Priestess is ruler of the moon and her energy will ebb and flow with the cycles of the moon. The easiest way to do this is note when the moon is new and full. New moons are good for beginnings and starting things. Full moons are good for releasing and letting go of things.
  • Spend some time in the dark. Sight is our most relied upon sense as human beings. Darkness allows your other senses to perceive instead, heightening your awareness of the world. The fresh perspective available in the dark is a wonderful High Priestess attribute that you can better connect with this year.

Deep Dives into the Scorpio New Moon, November 18, 2017

The New Moon is the best time of the month to get in touch with the astrological energy supporting intention setting for your next four weeks. This New Moon in Scorpio encourages you to dive deep into your subconscious, your watery emotional realm, your most heartfelt desires and focus on self development and personal mastery. This is a wonderful time to confront your addictions or other bad habits and make positive changes towards the life you want. Scorpio asks you to question and examine what is motivating your excesses and bad behaviors. What is missing from your life? What do you need to let go of? How can you facilitate this transformation? This is the process of death and rebirth that is so strongly connected with the energy of Scorpio. Do not be afraid to really get to the bottom of things and do some soul searching. It’s worth diving into your shadow in order to move forward into the light as a fuller version of yourself.

Below are three questions for you to ask the tarot at this Scorpio New Moon. I used the Mary-el Tarot to do an example reading for myself, and perhaps it will help you access your subconscious at this time as well. The Mary-el Tarot is beautiful and strange, and doesn’t read for me like other decks. I rely heavily upon the book of interpretations that Marie White includes with her deck in my reading here:

Mary El Tarot: IX of Wands, Page of Wands, X of Swords

What is unseen that needs to come to the surface?- IX of Wands
Creative Fire energy and the Free Will to create whatever my destiny prescribes are represented here by the lion and the woman in the card image, respectively. The lion is wild, untamed, passionate, creative, transformative, and intense. It is me without the armor of my personality and societal influences which keep me humble and in check. This fire lies beneath the surface of my conscious self that I present to the world. I can use my free will to access this fire and use it to create my future, though. I am limitless and unrestrained as long as I acknowledge that I am not a victim of circumstance. I can be whatever I want to be. Just because I don’t have something, doesn’t mean I can’t get it. Just because I have never done something, doesn’t mean I can’t do it now. I learn through my trials and errors and can continuously reinvent and reimagine who and what I am. Now, with the help of the Scorpio New Moon, I can dig deep to get in touch with my creative side, my inner fire, and bring my wild side into the light. There is no reason to be restrained and under control when we can each burn as bright as the sun, brilliant and genius in our life creations.

What emotional burdens, old habits or beliefs do I need to let die, let go of, clear away?- Page of Wands
It is time for me to accept that I have faith and strong beliefs and move onto using those strengths. I have a tendency towards nihilism, a willingness to feel that life has no meaning. This is reactionary behavior though, as it isn’t that I truly believe that life has no purpose, but rather that that purpose in unknowable. Faced with the idea that I may never consciously understand the purpose of my life, I reject meaning all together. Deep down I do believe and have a strong faith that my life, and life in general, has meaning. There is a reason that this all happening. It just makes me so tired to go over and over in my mind that I don’t know what that meaning is. This Page of Wands asks me to get out of my head, to move away from my thoughts, and just listen to my soul’s calling. My soul does call me to me, I can simply listen and accept, instead of going back into my mind to analyze and despair over mental failings of understanding. This life is not to be understood in words and numbers, it is to be known in the depth of my soul. Now is the time to set aside the old habits of thinking and the burden of needing logical explanations.

How can I prepare for rebirth and set the stage for growth?- X of Swords
“The ego is the eternal limited by words.” Here I set the stage for growth by living the message from the Page of Wands: it is time to break free of the prison of my thoughts. The Swords represent the mental realm and all the energy I’ve been expending upon thinking and living in my thoughts. I have built up my self image there, my ego is wrapped up in my mind, I create and protect this image of myself with words and my attachment to my intelligence. The X represents an ending, but also a beginning. It contains both 10 and 1. It is the space in between, where I ready myself for transformation. I’m preparing for a way of being that includes silence and trust, instead of constant words and doubts. We each create our lives by the limits of our mindsets. What if we each adopted a mindset of limitlessness? What if we didn’t draw conclusions based on fear and anxiety? What if we let anything be possible? The image of the X of Swords is Scorpio, is Death, coming to sweep away old ways of thinking and create an open space for limitlessness.

I loved doing this little reading for myself this morning of the New Moon. The Mary El tarot just blows my mind every time I do with a reading with it. If you’re interested in receiving an email reading for your own New Moon energy and intention setting, please get in touch. Happiest of New Moons to you!
