Relationships Reflection with the New Moon in Libra, October 8, 2018

The New Moon we are graced with today is in Libra, the sign ruled by the planet Venus. If you’re into astrology at all, you’ve probably heard much talk recently about the Venus retrograde cycle that is currently taking place. Starting on October 5th, and lasting for the next 40 days till November 16th, Venus will appear to backtrack across the sky and the zodiac signs of Scorpio into Libra. The retrograde movement of the planets is associated with going within, reflection, and reassessment. These energies are particularly potent within the realm of Libra/Venus which rules relationships, the feminine, balance, love, and values. We will all feel a summons to reexamine our relationships: our romantic relationships, friendships, business partnerships, and most importantly our relationship to ourselves. This is a great time to ask the tarot for some guidance on what intentions can best help us navigate this moon cycle for optimum balance and harmony. Here are some prompts for you to try:

~What intention can I set to help me focus on emotional balance during this moon phase?
~What intention can I set to help me create harmony and equality in my relationships?
~What intention can I set to help me deal with Venus’ call for self reflection and reassessment of the past?

Here is a reading for us all using my favorite fall deck, the Zombie Tarot:

The Zombie Tarot: Five of Cups, King of Cups, Page of Pentacles

~What intention can I set to help me focus on emotional balance during this moon phase?
Five of Cups
The V of Cups signifies difficult emotions such as regret, longing, grief, and sadness. It often comes up at a time when it feels like all has been lost. You are faced with crushing disappointment and have no idea what could lift your dark mood. The world looks bleak. There is a tendency now to obsess about what has passed, what has caused you pain, what is gone and can never return. The imbalance in the world is that feelings, emotions, and matters of the heart are not as important and meaningful as power, money, and big business. When people’s lived experiences don’t matter, especially those of women, what is the point of society? Who does it actually serve?

At this New Moon, set the intention to move away from the darkest depths of grief and despair. In order to bring balance into your life you will need to allow for hope and optimism to be present and acknowledged. There is no need to question the validity of your pain, the horror of your past, the sadness you have felt. That pain is real and that pain is acknowledged. The thing is, you can’t stay there and relive it forever. That isn’t for your highest good, that isn’t going to solve any of your issues, that isn’t going to make it better- ever. What will make your situation better, and consequently improve the lives of all those in your life that love and care about you, is to open yourself up to the possibility of future happiness. Appreciating the small moments of your day, practicing gratitude and kindness, and saying yes to what you DO want- this will help you move forward and heal. Set the intention to invite hope and love into your life and leave guilt, doubt, and grief behind.

~What intention can I set to help me create harmony and equality in my relationships?
King of Cups
The King of Cups is empathetic, diplomatic, generous, and deeply kind. He is compassionate, creative, understanding, and aware. These are all characteristics that we should set our intentions towards being in the month ahead. The King of Cups is the ultimate symbol of harmony and equality embodied in human form that the tarot has to offer us. This card comes as a very good sign that we have the emotional maturity and depth of character to manage and improve our relationships during this moon cycle and continue that through the whole Venus retrograde cycle.

There’s a certain amount of restraint to the King of Cups as well, he doesn’t overflow with emotion but rather balances emotion with intellect. He knows how to communicate matters of the heart without emotional manipulation, waterfalls of tears, or screaming matches about who cares more. He has control over his emotions, knows how to set boundaries between personal and shared feelings, and can provide stability and support for those around him. Set the intention this month to act as a King of Cups yourself when dealing with issues of balance and harmony in your relationships. How would you like to be treated? How would you like to be spoken to? How can you compromise and negotiate? The King of Cups is here to back you up with quiet, sensitive, and understanding vibrations.

~What intention can I set to help me deal with Venus’ call for self reflection and reassessment of the past?
Page of Pentacles
A Page is always a good sign for new beginnings, just like a New Moon. This Page has a rather responsible and determined youthful energy, bringing fresh opportunity or possibility to your life. His appearance signifies a real exuberance for learning about yourself by diving into the self-reflection and reassessment demanded by this Venus retrograde with an eagerness to learn new things about yourself. Now is the chance to see your past in the bright light and perspective of your present self!  Set the intention to go into this cycle with an open mind and a willingness to learn new things about yourself.

Maybe you’re not the type of person who delights in processing the past and rehashing old issues, well- you just might have to do it anyway this season. Don’t be afraid to go down this road of analysis. The Page of Pentacles is offering up many learning opportunities in a spirit of wonder, but also practicality. Don’t be surprised if your self assessment unearths some old dreams about home, finances, work, or your body that were lost along the way. You could find yourself revved up by a great business idea you had before, a renewal of a project around the house, a job pop up you always wanted, or a refreshed diet and exercise plan. The point is, set the intention to be wide-eyed and open to possibility, the Page of Pentacles isn’t adapt at reengaging with the past, but he sure can make the most practical use of what he finds there.

Tarot Blog Hop: A Tarot Art Project with the Kings

PREVIOUS BLOG | MASTER LIST | NEXT BLOG

Welcome to The Willow Path Tarot! If you are following along on the June Tarot Blog Hop, or are a regular reader of this blog, know that today’s blog is a special entry on a topic that many other tarot bloggers are writing about right now as well. The topic is “a tarot art project for non-artists.” We are all finding inspiration in non-tarot related artwork and then creating a tarot card out of that artwork.

This just happens to be something I do every Wednesday at The Willow Path Tarot! I take photos from my personal Instagram feed, which is about my travels and life outside of tarot, and associate those images to a tarot card. Eventually, I plan to print out all these images and make my own tarot deck from my travels. I’m still in the beginning phases of that process, so today I’d like to share with you how things are going with the Kings in this newly developing tarot deck.

King of Cups

So, in my travel tarot deck, which I’m tentatively calling The Travel Tarot Deck (ahhh, I know, so original!), the Kings are going to be represented by mountains. I’ve chosen mountains to represent the Kings because I associate mountains with stability, security, maturity, and rulership, all personality traits of the Kings in the tarot deck. I chose this one on the left here to be the King of Cups because of the river in the picture, bringing together the Cups which represent water, and the mountains which represent the Kings. The King of Cups is compassion and welcoming, he goes with the flow, much like a river. He brings comfort and kind words, understanding and mediation. The King of Cups is balanced and generous, bringing peace and harmony with his careful demeanor. This river in Colorado definitely gives me that peaceful feeling of the Cups and the mountains add the dimension of the strength of a King.

Sedona, Arizona, USA

King of Wands                                                     Sedona, Arizona, USA

I’ve chosen this rock formation in Arizona to be the King of Wands. The red color of the rocks makes me think of dry, summer heat and the Fire of the Wands. I associate Wands with summer and this card has a summery feel to me. I think this might be a part of or near the rock formation called Devil’s Bridge, and the King of Wands always seems like a bit of a devil to me. He is charismatic, passionate, and tempting. He has the energy of someone who knows what he wants and knows how he can get it. Even so, he is an honorable person, responsible and hard-working, almost tirelessly so. The King of Wands has a vision and a plan to go along with that vision. This range in Sedona prickles with a brittle heat that causes visions to dance before our eyes. The King of Wands understands the visions seen in the fire and can work with it to greatest effect.

PentaclesKing

King of Pentacles                                                   Colca Canyon                                        Cabanaconde, Peru

This photo on the left is one I’m thinking about using for the King of Pentacles. There is a deep Earth energy to a canyon, and this photo is of Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyon hikes in the world. It was a long way down, requiring a lot of the strength and determination of a King to finish. The King of Pentacles is in it for the long haul in every aspect of his character. He is practical, calculating, and under control. He is disciplined and powerful. This King is also connected to the abundance of the Earth, offering brute strength like these canyon walls, but also fertile abundance much like the oasis at the bottom which has shade, water, and a place to rest after a difficult effort. I’m not entirely sold on the image because it seems a bit dry and I associate Pentacles with winter so I would like to do something more snowy, but… for now it has got me thinking.

KingofSwords

King of Swords                                                              Red Rock Canyon National Park                               Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

This photo I’m thinking of using for the King of Swords, but am also not completely satisfied with it. That’s ok, though since I’m planning on seeing many more mountains before this deck is finished. 🙂 I like this one for now because there is something dark and brooding about it, which reminds me of the King of Swords. He is the King of logic and reasoning. His powerful intellect understands the concepts of truth and justice. Something about that kind of mental prowess is dark to me. There is a tendency towards black and white thinking, when so often the world is made up of shades of grey. The King of Swords excels at interpreting that grey area, defining it and forcing it back to black and white. The light and dark interplay of the mountains in this photograph remind me of that balance the King of Swords achieves.

Okay, that’s my contribution to the June Tarot Blog Hop!  I hope you enjoyed learning about the Kings in my Travel Tarot Deck and come back to the blog often to see the progress I’m making on my Instagram inspired deck. A King Amongst Cups

cups14  Well hello handsome 😉  Someday I want to grow up and be just like you Mr. King of Cups.  Generally speaking, we are all capable of taking on the characteristics of each of the court cards in the tarot deck, be it Page, Knight, Queen, or King.  Being an introvert, it isn’t hard for me to connect to the inward looking energy of the Queen cards, but something about the outward focus of the Kings is a challenge to me.  I do think it’s good to challenge myself often though, so whenever this guy comes up as my card of the day, or in a tarot spread I do for myself, I know that he is there to remind me to always grow and try and expand. I am a part of this society and the King of Cups gives me guidance on how to be the best part of it I can be.

The characteristics that best describe the King of Cups are: generosity, emotional balance, diplomacy, and compassion.  He is a master of his own emotions and can utilize and project that mastery onto his interactions with other people to everyone’s advantage.  I definitely aspire to have a deep understanding of my emotional needs and inner self so I can calmly navigate any of life’s dilemmas.  The King of Cups has this beautiful combination of intelligence and intuition that is indispensable to someone trying to learn tarot, like me.  He also knows how to bring harmony and temperance into his relationships with other people and is often sought out for wise counsel.  As I’ve said before,  I am striving big time for more Temperance energy in my life this year 🙂

I often get this card when I ask the tarot what kind of energy I should bring to a social event I’m about to attend.  Actually, he’s come up so many times for this particular question, that I don’t even feel the need to ask the tarot what kind of energy to bring to a social engagement- I just know to channel the King of Cups.  This King is very loving and fun (and comes with his own cup!), but he is also good at reading different people’s motives and needs so that good communication can flow and misunderstandings can be avoided.  He also reminds me to be generous and accepting of other people and their disparate needs.   I love it when the tarot can create this kind of insight and change in my understanding of myself.  Now it’s Saturday night so this King of Cups is going out to the bar to see some live music.  Cheers!
