Are We Falling in Love?: 5 Tarot Cards for New Love

Happy February! The month of love! It’s a slow month for greeting card and candy companies so they came together to create a little holiday called Valentines’ Day. It’s a glorious day when we’re obligated to show our special someone affection with cloyingly sweet poems and sugar confections. And don’t forget the flowers! Maybe you can pick up on my slightly mocking tone, as I’m a firm believer that every day is a wonderful day to show love, appreciation, and affection for the people in your life that deserve it (and they all do!). Although I might not approve of corporations co-opting the best of human emotions in order to sell things, all the same, I’m going to spend some time this February writing about love and relationships and how these themes come up in the tarot.

I believe that tarot reflects all human emotions and experiences in its 78 cards. How this is possible, I don’t know. It’s amazing! It’s magic! Today, I’ve picked five cards that represent new love. When I see these cards in a reading, especially a reading focused on love and relationships, I get a little tingle that things are going well in the love department for this person. If all five came up I would be completely astounded, but even just one or two is a great sign that things are progressing well. If love between people interested in having a romantic relationship is what your reading is focused on, these are the cards you want to see.

Of course, these aren’t the only cards that are indicative of a new love or a relationship that has lasting and loving potential. I’m just picking cards for fun here, to introduce some light and love into our February. I’m also going to write more than one post about love this February, and I refrained from repeating cards in these different love posts. So while it would certainly be great to get The Lovers in any card about relationships, I’m only going to write about that particular card once during this February series. That’s just me giving more cards a chance to show their lovey dovey side.

Okay, introductions have been made, now let’s move onto to my picks for the top five tarot cards for new love. Swoon!

Rider Waite Smith Tarot: Page of Cups, Ace of Cups, Knight of Cups, II of Cups, IX of Cups

Did you notice that I picked all cards from the suit of Cups for new love?  Sure, there is emotion and love in all of the other suits of the tarot deck as well, but something about new love had me concentrating hard on the demonstrative emotions present in cards of the Cups suit. There isn’t a ton of nuance to a fresh relationship. As much as you’d like to say that there are rational reasons why you’re falling in love with someone, really you know that if you don’t feel those butterflies in your stomach and that thrill down your spine, it’s not quite what you were hoping for or expecting. It might not even feel real or good enough if you’re heart doesn’t skip a beat at the sight of your lover in a crowd, or your finger shake with anticipation as you swipe to open the latest text message. So I chose five Cups cards to evoke that newness in a relationship when you’ve got all the feels.

The Wild Unknown Tarot

Okay, my first pick for a tarot card that represents new love, falling in love, or the beginning of a relationship is the Page of Cups. The Pages in the tarot deck are messengers and the Cups represent the Water realm of the emotions. So, the Page of Cups brings you messages from the emotions, and he really likes to be the bearer of happy news. He’s here to say, “This one’s a keeper. This one you could really fall in love with for good. There’s potential for a deeper connection from the vibes I’m picking up.” He holds out his Cup as if he wants to have a toast to celebrate the messages of love that he brings you. He’s supper happy to be a part of the whole set up. If you’re waiting to be asked out on that first date, or told that someone has a little crush on you, this card is a good indication that you’re going to get the message soon.

The Page of Cups enjoys flirting, getting to know you, romance, love, and joy. This energy is great for first dates, and the beginning of a relationship when you’re trying to put your best foot forward, but still be authentic to yourself. You will have the ability to project your best self, because you will truthfully feel worthy of love with the Page of Cups energy coursing through you. This Page is happy-go-lucky,  playful, and exuberant. You’ll be able to enjoy spontaneous moments of connections and share yourself without restraint. He is also new and innocent in a way. When the Page of Cups shows up in a new love reading, you might be ready and willing to leave your past behind, put down any relationship baggage that doesn’t represent you and your highest self, and then align your energy to now resonate at that higher level that is your inner truth.

Next up in my top picks for new love is the Ace of Cups. The Aces, like the Pages, stand for new beginnings. Any Ace would be great as indicator for a new relationship, but once again, Cups are all about emotions and we’re talking about love today, folks, so the Ace of Cups is a great new beginning in the realm of the heart. Aces also represent the essence of a suit, so the very essence of the Cups suit is love and compassion. It is the fulfillment of the heart’s deepest desires. It is the overflowing wellspring of emotion that one often feels at the beginning of a relationship when you are just so happy, thankful, overwhelmed, and enamored with the one you have finally found.

Linestrider Tarot

If you haven’t found anyone yet to share a love connection with, this is a great card to get in alignment with in order to bring that love into your life. Channeling the open and abundant energy of the Ace of Cups attracts love to you, as like attracts like. When you are feeling love, love is what you will get more of in your life. It is so very necessary to first have self-love before you go about giving and receiving love from another person. The Ace of Cups invites you to love who you are on a soul level, heart level, mental level, and physical level. The more success you have with this inner work of self love, the easier, more natural, and quicker will come the ability to connect with others in that same manner. When you see the Ace of Cups in a reading, it’s a wonderful time to get into the deep emotion of love at it’s core essence.

Shadowscapes Tarot

Along comes the Knight of Cups, as my next pick for a great indicator of a love connection in a reading. The Knight of Cups is the great romantic of the tarot deck. He loves to be in love. “All the feels” is his comfort zone. This card is more likely to show up when you’re already dating someone, have decided to you’re into each other, and are now feeling ready and willing to be intimate and romantic. This is the Valentine’s Day energy of chocolate and flowers, candlelit dinners, weekends away in the country with rose petals on the bed. There’s an air of seduction around the Knight of Cups, a sexy energy that you may feel like embodying to wow your partner. Or you could now be interested in allowing yourself to open up and share more deeply with the one you’re dating these days.

The Knight of Cups is also a messenger, like the Page of Cups, but brings slightly more prestigious or important messages. If you’re waiting to hear the “L word” from your (hopefully) lover, or have a big conversation about “where this is all going,” this is the card you want to see for a positive confirmation that the feelings of love are mutual. Now is the right time to get real about sharing your feelings, listen to what your partner has to say, and take your relationship to the next level. The Knight of Cups will sweep you off your feet with swoon-worthy romantic gestures, straight out of a movie. You could find yourself making these grand gestures or be the recipient of a 100 red roses, either way, love is in the air and it feels wonderful!

Le Tarot des Femmes Erotiques- II of Cups

Do I even need to explain the II of Cups? I mean, look at it! In the image from artist Pamela Coleman Smith above, we see two figures exchanging or sharing their Cups of emotions. They look seriously into each other, and are blessed from above by the winged lion of passion, and a caduceus of healing and balance. This depicts the idea that a new love is the coming together of opposites, the joining of binary energy to create oneness. This is the beauty of two becoming one (excuse the Spice Girls reference). I like the art of Pamela Coleman Smith because the people she draws defy typical gender norms, especially if you’re willing to suspend the idea that men wear pants and women wear dresses. You can do it! It isn’t just about a man and woman coming together, as opposites genders attract. It is beyond that, the idea that two people can be connected and understand their oneness with all of creation through the small experience of just the two of them sharing oneness.

Perhaps all of that is a bit deep for new love, but really, what is love besides the recognition of oneness in a binary world? We all crave love because we understand on an unconscious, fundamental level that we are all one, made of the same energy, and it is only our senses that separate us. The II of Cups hints at that oneness. The II of Cups is about kindness, togetherness, gentleness. It’s that fresh start of love when you are on your best behavior naturally, showing the true essence of your kind and simple nature. There is a lot of potential for even deeper connection when the II of Cups appears in a reading. This new love that you are experiencing now may be the start of something long lasting.

Shadowscapes Tarot

The last card I picked to represent new love is the IX of Cups. This is the card of wishes come true. The fat and happy little man above is content and smug with all of his many Cups lined up behind him. This is the feeling you get when you wish upon every star to find a companion who listens to you and truly sees you and then you find that person! It’s like you can hardly believe your good luck. It might feel like luck, so there can be a little prickle of doubt that you don’t deserve this happiness, but do not go down that road. You need to be focused on how well everything is working out for you, and don’t give doubt the time of day. You’ve hit the jackpot! Maybe you made a long list of attributes that you wished to find in a lover and they all walked in the door in one package and you just feel so goddamn good about it.

And you should feel good because you deserve this happiness! The IX of Cups shows up when you’ve been putting in the effort. You’ve worked on your self love, you’ve explored and probed for what you want in a relationship, you’ve asked the Universe for this person, and you’ve acted as if it was happening for so long that it is actually happening. This is a culmination of all that hard work. This is your reward and you can now be satisfied and content with the love you have attracted into your life by putting out all those love vibes everywhere you went. This is just the beginning, remember that, but still enjoy the shit out of these moments of new found love. These are the memories you are going to turn back to again and again with that blissful smile of nostalgia for new love. It’s time to have your cake and eat it too!

Okay, that’s it for today. It’s a fun exercise to go through your deck and pick your top five love cards (or top five whatever cards!).  If you’re in the mood to play with your tarot deck, let me know what you would pick for this exercise! I would love to hear from you 🙂  Happy February, month of LOVE! I hope to be back super soon with another top five about the next layer of the love parade, my top five cards for choosing your life partner and getting hitched!

What will help me move confidently toward my goals for financial security and abundance?– Page of Cups

The Page of Cups brings messages of love, abundance, and fresh emotional starts.  This card is Venus telling you that you already have everything you need in order to be financially secure and abundant. What you really need is more joy, sunshine, and love in your life, not more money.  When you focus on what brings you happiness, on enjoying your youth or your fresh starts, and stop worrying about money, you will find that you actually are secure.  Does money buy love?  It seems to be common knowledge in all cultures that money does not equal happiness.  What is the point of your life then- to be happy or to be rich?  If you can’t have both, wouldn’t you pick happiness?  What would be the point of financially abundant life if all that money did not bring an abundance of love and joy? The Page of Cups is here to tell you that the more confidently you reach for happiness, the closer you will come to financial abundance. A life in which you focus on what you love instead of what you lack relieves anxiety, improves quality of life, and enhances your relationships by being a person that others enjoy

The Hanged Man Shadowscapes Tarot

How can I create more love, acceptance, and intimacy in my relationships?- The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man asks you to be patient, to be still, to listen and observe.  Are you allowing your loved ones to be themselves?  Are you acknowledging the unique traits of the people in your life and allowing them to shine forth in their best capacity? Oftentimes, when we try to change people, when we try to put them in a box, or make them conform, we limit and suppress our ability to love.  People can change.  We all change every day.  Humans are not static, but that change works best when it comes from within. When we force others to change, it usually leads to unhappiness and doesn’t stick anyway.  The Hanged Man suffers a bit from not being able to influence the world as she waits for a shift in perspective, a change in the wind, the right moment to act.  There is much suffering in life, though, it’s a given.  The willingness to wait for a phase to be completed usually deepens our most intimate relationships.  We allow our children to be teenagers for years, knowing we will love the adults they become even if they are little nightmares in the meantime.  We accept that our partners will go through career uncertainty, Saturn returns, midlife crises, etc, but who they essentially are doesn’t change. Our souls are eternal and lovable. The Hanged Man goes with that flow, trying to see from new angles, and waiting to understand instead of reacting tactlessly.

How can I invite more relaxation, patience, and luxury into my life?- IX of Swords

The biggest hurdle to finding relaxation is anxiety. Relaxation and anxiety are opposites.  They are mortal enemies.  If we put our anxieties aside relaxation enters to soothe, fortify, and rejuvenate us. When anxieties win out we exhaust, deplete, and confuse ourselves with striving and worrying.  The Taurus New Moon wants you to stay, “NO!” to anxieties for a little bit.  Will a facial solve your issues at work?  Will a gourmet meal solve your weightloss concerns? Will a bouquet of flowers help pay the rent at that apartment?  Probably not, but a little self care might just give you the strength to confront your challenges with renewed determination and clarity of vision.  You weren’t going to solve all of your problems tonight regardless, so why not take the night off, heat up some water, steam your pores open and then give them a scrub with some honey and sea salt.  It’s just an hour of your night, you already have all those things in your kitchen, and you’ll feel so lovely afterwards you won’t be so anxious about your work, weight, love life, kids, problems, etc. This goes along with the Page of Cups urging you to focus on love and positivity.  Take a break from anxiety and the negative, it doesn’t help anyone for you to be a dark storm cloud, least of all yourself!

New Moon in Taurus- Reading on Self Love

Hello there, lovely blog readers.  Today we have our regular New Moon reading for setting our intentions for the coming moon cycle. The Taurus New Moon lends us aid when focusing on the areas of love and personal wants and desires. I’ve decided to center this month’s reading around self love. We all need as much of it as we can possibly engender. Self love helps us grow, learn, love, and shine.  When we truly love and accept ourselves, we create the ability to receive the love of other people, acceptance of our differences and, most importantly, acknowledgement of our oneness as humans. Here is your New Moon reading for this Taurus New Moon!

What will empower us to open up to self love?- Daughter of Cups

Daughter of Cups Wild Unknown Tarot

Daughter of Cups
Wild Unknown Tarot

The Daughter of Cups is a gentle reminder of the innocence and essence of love itself. What is love? What does it mean to you? What do you think of it and how does it make you feel? To me, love is the recognition of oneness in a world of duality. The way we humans perceive the world is all about opposites and differences. We understand the dark as the opposite of light. We know happiness because it is everything that sadness is not. We define who we are as totally not like the people we don’t relate to, despise, are jealous of, or can’t understand. Then love comes along and those barriers vanish, cease to exist. Suddenly we see that all life is one, that universal energy animates us all, that we are connected and bound together by love. The Daughter of Cups represents that universal essence of oneness that when recognized is described by the word Love. How can you “see” that essence inside of you?

In the Northern Hemisphere, it is spring and ducklings are aplenty along the waterways. These tiny, fluffy creatures make me squeal with delight when I see them. So cute!  I love them!  But, why should I love them?  Is there a logical reason I should be in love with baby birds?  Not that I can think of, personally.  For me, this love of ducklings is an easy example of connecting and recognizing my oneness of all life. This type of love is the love of the Daughter of Cups, completely innocence and fresh.  Ask yourself what makes you feel this type of love?  Perhaps it’s ducklings as well!  Get out there and connect with it now.  Then extend that love of the ducklings or flowers or hotdogs or stationary into yourself. See the connection between you and then which you love with an innocent and open heart, and recognize that it is the same love you have for yourself.  In this way we grow our self love.

What is blocking our self love?  What can be leave behind?- V of Wands reversed

V of Wands reversed Wild Unknown Tarot

V of Wands reversed
Wild Unknown Tarot

The V of Wands from The Wild Unknown Tarot is a perfect illustration of separateness. Here we see 5 Wands, each with an energy field of repulsion and exclusion around it. “Keep away from me! I have my own agenda, passions, inspirations, ideas, etc.”, each Wand seems to be saying. Does this type of vibe and behavior help you? Why are you keeping yourself separate? You may think that you are protecting yourself by walling others off.  But you’re not safe, you’re not a fortress. You are a part of this world, you need to figure out a way to make it work for you.  You were born into this life, at this time, for a purpose. That purpose is not to be alone and sad, or to feel like a social outcast or an unworthy waste of space.  No one is born for that, that is not how it works here on Earth. Connecting with the universal energy all around you will help you recognize love.  Go look at that duckling and feel your feelings!  If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, slipping into autumn, try connecting with the beauty of a fall sunset.  The shortening of the days is part of your natural life rhythm that you can delve into and feel the oneness of creation.  Above all, find ways to break down the walls around and experience more oneness and less duality. In this way we open up to self love.

Advice from the tarot at this New Moon in Taurus:  IV of Cups

IV of Cups Wild Unknown Tarot

IV of Cups
Wild Unknown Tarot

This is an interesting card for advice for us at this time. The IV of Cups in the Wild Unknown stands for selfishness and greed. Perhaps this is a message that it is perfectly ok, even necessary, for you to be a bit selfish when building up your self love. Duh, right!?  It might come across to others, or even to yourself, that you are thinking a bit too much about your self interest these days.  But you need to!  Take some “me time” to really look inside. Examine yourself, your thoughts, your actions, your feelings, and their connection to your soul purpose. What feels out of wack? What seems to be going along smoothly?  How can you bring more flow into your life? The IV of Cups represents introspection. The dreaded FOMO (fear of missing out) might try and take ahold of you, but resist it. Do what you want to do. Be satisfied and grateful for what you have and who you are. Don’t look for greener pastures or outside cues that you can be happy when you have A, B, and C.  You can be loving and happy now, with yourself, with your life situation, with the things you possess. All of this is enough, in fact you are abundant, radiant, and beautiful right now. Allow you to be the most important person in your life today. In this way grow your self love, so you can be in the best position to offer your love to others.

Ok, there’s your Taurus New Moon reading for developing self love.  It was quite a pep talk, huh?  I aim to find positive and affirming messages in all of my tarot readings.  Why dwell excessively on the negative aspects of life when it does us all so much good to bring an equal balance of positivity into our lives. Best wishes for the coming moon cycle, and as always, please get in touch if you would like a personal tarot reading!

Message of Love with the Page of Cups

Page of Cups Rider Waite Smith deck

Page of Cups
Rider Waite Smith deck

I find it super helpful when studying the tarot court cards to relate the energy of each of these card to a particular feeling, situation, or person in my life.  This brings the card to life for me, and helps me commit the essence of the card meaning into my memory.  Today, I’m feeling a strong resonance with the Page of Cups. This little lover is one of my favorite cards in the deck, as he signifies messages of love, feelings of happiness and joy, youthful enthusiasm, and creative new beginnings.  Whether these are experiences you are having yourself, or an atmosphere that someone is bringing into your life- what’s not to love about the Page of Cups energy?!

So, this sense of a lovely, new beginning in my life comes from a certain romantic event that happened last week at the beach in Florida. It was a beautiful, rainy day (Cups are for Water!), and Kristen insisted on heading to the beach for reasons unknown to me that seemed very stubborn and impractical since it wasn’t a nice beach day and we had a lot of work we could be doing. I figured it would be easier to go and get it over with, so off we went to the beach in the rain.  Kristen parked overlooking the water and we sat there looking at the water and the birds and the raindrops.  Kristen was talking about what a nice time we were having, and how much she enjoyed being with me, traveling with me, living with me, and working with me.  There was a lot of together time and she was happy about it.  And then she proposed!  And I said yes!  Bam! Messages of love indeed! Hello Page of Cups!

Page of Cups Shadowscapes tarot

Page of Cups

The Page of Cups can often bring these types of unexpected messages, so surprises abound when he shows up in a reading. I’ve also have some friends tell me about pregnancies lately, which is typical Page of Cups fun news!  This Page is also very intuitive, so listen to your inner voice when trying to channel his creative and renewing energy.  Yes, renewal is often associated with the Page of Cups, and in that sense I feel a renewed commitment to my relationship.  I think it’s worth noting that this reaffirms the placement of The Emperor in my personal New Year reading, which I read as 2015 being a year when Kristen and I would create a firm foundation for our relationship, with a structured commitment.  Engagement indeed!

So that’s the short story of my engagement, told a bit long, and the reason why I’m feeling surrounded by the warm glow of the Page of Cups these days.   In this instance the Page could be me or it could be my girlfriend, or should I say fiancee (ok, I probably won’t say that much because it sounds super pretentious to me!)?!  Either way, I’m feeling a bit dreamy, a lot of love, and a happiness in my heart.  This Page can be a wonderful reminder to connect with your heart space and your inner child in order to feel the youthful joy of being alive. He asks you to be emotional and to wear your heart on your sleeve.  There are so many beautiful things to be happy about in your life, so why not indulge in some deep joy regarding all that you have in this life.

New Moon Reading for July 26th, 2014

For this New Moon in Leo on July 26th, I did a reading to help us all to release old patterns at this time.  I also asked what would help us do this release, and then what we should allow to grow with the moon in the next couple of weeks. I used the Deviant Moon tarot deck for the reading.  Here is what I drew:

To release: Page of Cups What will help: The Moon What to let grow: The Star

To release: Page of Cups              What will help: The Moon             What to let grow: The Star

What to let go of before this New Moon:  Page of Cups
It’s time to let go of childish and immature emotional patterns.  You are ready to be emotionally mature and stable.  You are letting your feelings run over the same ground again and again, hoping to feel something different.  This is madness!  Stop reflecting, contemplating, stewing in, and obsessing over how your little heart feels.  You need to feel something new and you can’t do that if you’re still mulling over how you used to feel.  Get into this present moment and engender the kinds of feelings that you want to be experiencing now.  Emotions and feelings can grow and develop over time, let yourself get to the next phase.

What will help you to release and let go:  The Moon
Perhaps this is a bit of a cheeky, redundant, or obvious answer, but work with The Moon at this New Moon to help reset your emotions and outlooks.  The whole point of this reading is to let the energy of the moon support you in letting go at this time.  Many of us in the modern world are disconnected from moon cycles, influences, and energies.  Perhaps now is a good time to acquaint yourself with the different phases of the moon.  Try to note each day where the moon is in its cycle from New on July 26th to Full on August 10th. Spend some time looking up at it, being very still and present in the moment, and let its light and energy absorb into you.  This period of stillness and meditation does not to involve any self reflection.  Put your thoughts and emotions away and just be very aware of the energy that surrounds you and emanates from within you.  These moments of conscious presence will help you to let go of old emotional patterns that are no longer serving you, or are now hindering or harming you.  Being self aware will help you grow and develop with the ever increasing light of the moon.

What to let grow:  The Star
There is a shining hope inside of you.  Let you inner Star out to shine for yourself and others.  The Star works in harmony and serenity with everything around her.  While you are out under the night sky soaking in the energy of The Moon, let your awareness expand to encompass the whole vista of stars in the sky as well.  Can you feel the energy of the stars so far away?  Can you compare your small self to the vastness of the Universe and put your problems and issues in perspective?  The Star invites you to be hopeful and content that you can bring balance and harmony into your emotional patterns in the coming weeks.

There you have your New Moon Reading for July.  If you subscribe to The Willow Path Newsletter or are already a subscriber, you’re able to purchase a more personalized New Moon Reading for just $10.  Let the insightful and transformative power of tarot help you develop your own self awareness!  Best wishes and Happy New Moon!
