Allowing 2018 to be the Year of The High Priestess

2018 is the Year of the High Priestess! What is a tarot year card? It’s a simple numerological association created from adding up the numbers of the current year. Here’s how I figured it out for this year:  2+0+1+8= 11, which reduces to 1+1= 2. The number 2 is represented by The High Priestess in the tarot deck. I like to think about the energy of the year card and how that might apply to my year ahead. Below is a write up of what to expect during a year of The High Priestess.

The High Priestess
Keywords:  Intuition, Foresight, Inner Center, Subconscious, Higher self, Mysteries, Wisdom, Divine feminine, Being, Stillness, Serenity, Understanding, Compassion, Awareness, Self mastery, Advisor, Inner guidance, Knowledge
Reversed: Unintuitive, Out of touch, Switched off, Disconnected, Confusion, Mystery, Secretive, Denial of Shadow, Denial of Feminine, Busy or rushing, Noisy, Action-oriented, Superficial

Shadowscapes Tarot

A year of The High Priestess is one during which you connect to your calm inner center, you develop your intuition, and you learn about the power of being.  One of the easiest ways to understand the nature of The High Priestess is through comparison to The Magician. The Magician is card 1 in the 9-year life cycle and it is the card energy you were experiencing last year. In this world of duality in which we live, The Magician and The High Priestess are opposite sides of the same coin, they are two aspects of yourself which are necessary and supportive. The Magician has an outward focus, while The High Priestess points you inward.  The Magician physically senses reality, while The High Priestess uses her intuition. The Magician is about action and doing, while The High Priestess emphases the non-action of being.  The Magician is lightness, masculine, and assertive.  The High Priestess is shadow, feminine, and passive.

Comparison assists with interpreting the energy of The High Priestess because so many of her characteristics are considered inferior in our culture.  What you can learn during a High Priestess year is how necessary and useful these qualities are, though.  Both lightness and shadow are wholly needed to make up reality and your personal identity. The Magician and The High Priestess are the basis upon which reality is created and perceived by us humans, they are the foundation of existence.  They perfectly illustrate balance and duality.  During a High Priestess year you will become more deeply connected to that balance, delving into the dark side where calm, stillness, and being are just as powerful as effort, action, and doing.

So what does calm mean to The High Priestess? It is a slowing down to a halt. You will feel a deep need to quiet the mind this year and this need will be more easily met than in other years of your life. It will flow.  Not only will you want to sit quietly more often, you will also make the time to do it. One of the easiest ways to connect to your calm inner center is to stop moving. Spend time with your body without moving anything but your breath. Focus on this smallest of actions, most important for life. We breathe automatically, but we can also breathe purposefully. It is not like the beating of the heart, which we have no control over. The way we breathe is adjustable and the adjustments we make to that breathe can bring incredible results. Breath can be healing, it can be soothing, it can be invigorating, and it can be meditative. Bringing yourself in touch with The High Priestess is as easy as counting three deep breathes before you act. This is connection to calm and to stillness first, instead of immediate impulse reaction.

Rider Waite Smith

Channeling The High Priestess can also begin in the mind, just as well as by connection to the body through breathe. When your thoughts are a swirl of “Go! Do! Make!” take note of that frenetic energy in your mind. Watch your thoughts as an outsider instead of being caught up in the middle of the frenzy. Can you step outside of your thoughts and allow yourself a break?  A guided visualization or meditation can give you something to focus on that isn’t your thoughts. You can also try some counting of your deep breaths or reciting a mantra or affirmation.  Try something as simple as “I am not thinking right now, I am giving myself a rest.” The place you reach through this non-action of being is your calm inner center.  From your calm inner center you can make decisions and figure out how to take action without thinking or doing anything.

What you are listening to in your calm inner center is your intuition and your subconscious. The High Priestess teaches that there is more to the world and life than solely what meets the eye. The five senses are limited.  See, touch, taste, smell, and hear- this is how you perceive reality. But what about all that you can’t observe? There are energy fields around us that scientists can only detect with highly advanced scientific devices. But do you need a magnetometer to sense energy fields or can you tap into your built in intuition?  You will be able to sense these energies more acutely this year. Do not discount it just because you cannot see it. Listen to subtle signs you receive from the Universe that lead you down your life path. This is listening to your inner wisdom, your inherent knowing.

The High Priestess points out the way to this knowing, this accessing of your subconscious. She beckons you to listen, to open to the shadow side of reality that you tend to ignore and deny as you busy yourself getting on with the everyday mundane tasks of life. Using the subconscious, this inner knowing, this sixth sense opens you up to greater awareness this year. Things are not only what they appear. There is more. There are layers beneath the surface. There is space, so much space, between all of the molecules that make up our reality.  When you become aware of all that you do not know, you gain perspective and the ability to interpret the world more effectively. Acknowledge all that you do know about a situation and all that you cannot know at this time in order to make decisions.

Awareness of layers and space brings not only deeper understanding of life, but it also brings us together as people. We can be more compassionate towards each other when we break ourselves down and apart into the tiniest pieces possible and recognize that those things are all the same and therefore equal. This creates a feeling of interconnection that is super accessible to you during a High Priestess year. The concept of compassion and interconnection is often associated with the feminine. This is a year to get in touch with your feminine side, with the aspects of inner confidence, loving connection, and faith.

The Wild Unknown

There is something timeless and eternal about The High Priestess.  The High Priestess commands the subtle directive to go way back into the farthest reaches of time, back to the beginning of the earth, back to the question of what we are and why we exist.  This year carries messages from the past but really those messages are from outside of time.  The High Priestess does not subscribe to the concept of time in the same way our society does, so knowledge exists without the constraints of time. You can learn from the past, the present and the future all at once this year.  This kind of thinking may cause you to feel a bit more philosophical than usual this year.  There is knowledge and wisdom that just exists within you, and you can access that wisdom place more gently and easily this year.

One way to connect and get in tune with that wisdom of The High Priestess is to get out and explore nature. Isn’t it easier to feel the vibrational energy of this world when you are out surrounded by nature then when you are in your living room or out in the city? You can practice connecting to your inner High Priestess by contemplating, communing with, or contacting your favorite tree, garden, mountain or lake, etc. The respect and appreciation you show to nature tells the Earth that you love being here. It shows that you care for all of the Earth’s creatures and creations, including yourself. Communing with and thinking about the size and shape of the Earth also expands your reality, a key aspect of The High Priestess.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the modern world, the day-to-day grind of your everyday existence. Often, this business leads us far from stillness. All day long at work or with your family and friends, you are thinking and doing. It’s time to take a break and not think about anything for a little while. Can you focus on just your breathe, coming in and out of your body?  Take a moment to remind yourself, as frequently as possible because you will forget it every second, that there is more to life than what meets the eye. I remind you again: there is more to life that what you can perceive. There is a purpose here. Do you know what it is? The High Priestess asks: are you working towards your soul purpose?

Take some time out from rushing, doing, hurrying, getting things done, action, noise, distractions, tv, social media, facts. Take a moment for being. When you wake up in the morning, instead of checking your email first thing, check in with yourself. How does your body feel? What is your emotional state?  Ask yourself if you are disconnected, out of touch, switched off from your soul purpose. If so, how can you reconnect and realign yourself with that divinity you know in your heart? Go to the quiet place inside of you that you can reach at any time from any location. Look within to your calm inner center. Go there.

You may find the energy of The High Priestess somewhat disorienting and jarring. When you quiet the voice in your head, you may be confronted with a view of space and time that is open and scary. You may lose some of your illusions about right and wrong, up and down, past and future. Perhaps there is just a vast see of nothing waiting for you in your calm inner center and that is an uncomfortable and unwelcome feeling for you. You may have a strong desire to deny yourself this stillness, to try and skirt away and evade your passive, feminine, shadow side. Remember, that this is your super power this year but it is also your undeniable lot. If you can’t go within of your own volition now, you may be forced by outside circumstances. Surrender is not easy and can reveal truths that you are trying to hide from yourself. Be ready for things that are buried to pop up this year, possibly out of the blue, and demand to be dealt with and overcome.

Allowing the dark, passive, feminine, shadow side of life to emerge, educate, and expand you is possible and necessary this year. This is the counterpoint that balances out the bright, active, masculine, conscious aspects of you. We each contain both sides. This is a world of duality, in which we cannot comprehend anything except through the experience of its opposite.  You must know the dark to live in the light. You must be still in order to figure out how to act. This is a wonderful year to stop and contemplate these ideas, to get comfortable with them, and see where The High Priestess leads you in this part of your life cycle. I wish you well in this 2 year!

Some Action Steps for A High Priestess Year:

  • Connect with yourself physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Take a moment to meditate and tune into your personal energetic vibration.  What does it feel like to be still and connected to your body, mind, heart, and soul?  Give it a try!
  • Create a physical representation of your calm inner center. You could go to a place that makes you feel connected to your center. You could make a collage or draw a picture of this place. For example, I like to visualize an actual place I’ve been to that made me feel magical. Basically, think of your happy place of calm and then try and bring that place into this physical realm.
  • Write down your feelings on the energy of The High Priestess at the beginning of your new year of life. What does the information here about what to expect during a High Priestess year make you think and feel? Are you excited?  Unimpressed? Nervous? Worried? Skeptical?  Pumped?
  • Write down your desires, passions, enthusiasms, inspirations, and wishes at the beginning of this year. What do you want to question or reexamine this year? What do you want to accomplish with the added strength of The High Priestess?
  • Schedule in time to be peaceful.  Sit quietly.  Do nothing.  If you just keep skipping personally scheduled quiet time, try joining a meditation or yoga class.  Paying for the class and telling others that you will be there helps with your accountability. Even going once a month could be a huge improvement in your mental health if you can fully immerse yourself in stillness.
  • Go on a long hike, or spend a day out in a quiet natural place as often as you can. Don’t bring anything to do if you can manage it. Spend a least a little while without multitasking to just be in this beautiful nature setting, giving thanks to the Earth
  • Connect with the moon cycles this year. The High Priestess is ruler of the moon and her energy will ebb and flow with the cycles of the moon. The easiest way to do this is note when the moon is new and full. New moons are good for beginnings and starting things. Full moons are good for releasing and letting go of things.
  • Spend some time in the dark. Sight is our most relied upon sense as human beings. Darkness allows your other senses to perceive instead, heightening your awareness of the world. The fresh perspective available in the dark is a wonderful High Priestess attribute that you can better connect with this year.

Creating Structure with the New Moon in Capricorn

Hello, and welcome to the first New Moon tarot reading of 2018. It isn’t too late. In fact, now is the time you are best supported in intention setting because the New Moon in Capricorn loves this stuff. You’ve had a chance to rest from the holidays and readjust to the changing of that digit on the calendar, and can look with clarity at the road ahead.

Even if you did manage to make an amazing plan for the year ahead with big and beautiful intentions scheduled out for each and every day, this New Moon in Capricorn still lends you support to reexamine and reassert your commitment to your plan. Capricorn is an Earth sign and therefore aids you in grounding and centering yourself for the time ahead. Look to your health, home, and finances to assess whether or not you feel connected to these areas and have solid intentions and plans for your Earthy sector. How does your body feel? What could improve in your home environment? How are you feeling about your finances? Let Capricorn give you ideas for creating a solid, stable, structured, and disciplined approach to your new year.

Here’s a tarot reading for the Capricorn New Moon!:

The Wild Unknown Tarot: Father of Swords, Father of Cups rx, The Empress rx

How can I commit to and take responsibility for my intentions for the coming Moon cycle and the year ahead?– Father of Wands

The Father of Wands is a King card, it is an energy that readily accepts responsibility, in fact, you were born for it. You were born to excel and to lead. Even if you are only leading your own life you will inevitably end up leading others by this outstanding example. You are fully capable of taking control of your life and making it what you want it to be. You have an inclination and an innate ability to use your creativity, to connect with your light from within, and to shine that light out into the world around you. This personality is one that takes action, follows her spirit, and lives out her destiny without doubt or shame. Capricorn, ruled by the planet/energy of Saturn wants you to connect with what lights you up inside and use that knowledge to plan your year ahead. Remember that you are in charge of your life. You are responsible for yourself and how you decide to deal with your challenges and your good fortunes. The Father of Wands asks you to commit to actions aligned with your soul purpose, to what ignites your passion and inspires you.

What structures do I need to put in place in order to live up to my intentions?– Father of Cups reversed

Another Father/King card, showing the mature and responsible energy of Saturn/Capricorn all around you at this time. This King deals in the realm of emotions, and with the reversal we see an even deeper and more pronounced need to go within yourself and wade through the emotions that are connected to your goals for 2018. How do you want to feel this year? What are the feelings that you want to experience or generate? Will working on and accomplishing your goals garner those feelings? All of your emotions are connected with all of your actions, and the Father of Cups wants to make sure you understand and accept those connections. The easier and more natural it is for you to engender the feelings you want to invoke through your actions, the more flow you will experience in accomplishing your goals for the year. You want to put into a place a structure that weaves your emotions in with your inspiration to create actions that further your progress. Spend a little time today connecting to your emotional realm to get clear on what you want to feel in the year ahead.

How and where can I apply more grounding energy in my life?– The Empress reversed

The Empress is a beautiful Earth energy of abundance and love, with the reversal suggesting an inward bent to this energy. In other words, make sure you are nurturing and loving yourself from the inside all the way to the outside. When we care for, respect, and love ourselves, we set ourselves up to best care for, respect, and love others. Apply grounding Capricorn energy inward to build a firm foundation of self respect and self love. The Empress reversed also warns against overabundance, though, asking you to make sure that you’re not overdoing it. Overindulgence in food, overexertion in exercise, overspending to create comfort, overwork, or even suffocating those around you with over nurturing are all possibilities of going overboard with the abundance of The Empress. Focus most intensely on the values of Empress, rather than the possible rote actions of mothering and creation that she implies.

Be aware that you need your goals to be fulfilling of your life-long values in order to create meaning in your life. For example, a goal like, “Do 100 tarot readings,” does not really fulfill a value. Rather something like, “Develop deeper understanding of humanity, intuition, and how to use the tarot to explore the meaning of life,” might be more useful and satisfying in the long run. You can go out and do 100 tarot readings this year, but the act of doing tarot reading #100 won’t be as soul-fulfilling as the feeling that you have learned so much and understand tarot and people so much more because of your actions. Connecting a core value attached to a core emotion to your actions will make the things you put on your To Do List for 2018 more satisfying and likely to get done this year!

I like how we got all ruler cards (2 Kings and an Empress!) in this reading, which really speaks to the responsible and structured vibe of this Capricorn New Moon. We have such great support for using our mastery of self in order to further our goals, learn, and grow in 2018. Don’t be afraid of using what you already know and love about yourself as a stepping stone to do good work. Yes, there is still tons to learn and you’re probably wrong about most of the things you think you know right now, but that’s how life works! We can’t live in fear of the unknown, of taking risks, of being wrong, or of failure. These things are so necessary and useful. The pain of failure creates meaningful experiences that help us learn way better and faster than if we do nothing at all and let things stay at the status quo until someone or something comes along and makes us change. Wouldn’t you rather be the instigator, living out your own dreams, rather than a bystander who has change forced upon them by outside forces? Take control now with the Capricorn New Moon. Boldly state your intentions and wishes for the month and year ahead without fear or dread of the unknown or failure. Taking responsibility for your life is wonderful!

A beautiful morning last February, 2016 in Ocala Forest in Florida, USA.

Best wishes for your Capricorn New Moon day. I hope you can take the time to connect with the Moon and with the Earth energy of Capricorn today. Spend a few minutes outside in nature to thank our Mother Earth for supporting us in our plans for the year ahead and providing us with a wonderful home in which to learn and grow. If you would like a personalized New Moon reading, I am always available for email readings anytime!  Get in touch, I would love to hear from you.

A 2018 Theme Reading for Myself!

Happy 2018! I know we’re already a week into the year, but I finally had a chance today to sit down and go in depth into the cards I drew for myself for 2018. It ended up being an interesting, insightful, and guiding reading for me, even though I felt pretty unimpressed upon first look at the cards. That’s the thing about tarot cards, they can go deep if you are willing to take the plunge.

You can try out this spread for yourself or I’m happy to do a reading for you using this spread. You can hop over to my email tarot readings page and order one up any time this month. I’d be so excited to hear from you.

In the meantime, let’s see what the cards had to say for my 2018. Whoopee!

Linestrider Tarot Deck

My overall theme for 2018: Queen of Wands reversed
My theme for 2018, as represented by the Queen of Wands reversed, is centered on an internal connection to and exploration of Fire energy. This year, I will take a long look at my inner fire, inner creativity, spirit, passion, light, brilliance, and inspiration. I’m not a naturally fiery person, but we all have this place inside of us where our spirit resides. Perhaps the fact that I don’t usually connect with Fire energy is why the Queen of Wands has shown up as my 2018 theme, in order to point out to me where inside me of me could use more focus and attention.

I intend to get really comfortable with spirit this year, the kind of deep down familiarity that takes time to develop. I intend to explore the element of Fire and what its light can help me create and manifest in this world. The Queens are already focused internally and this reversal points inward as well, indicating a push to gain clarity on what my soul calling is, what I actually desire to be doing with my life. I am relatively content with the work I do, my home situation, my relationships, my path towards my best health, and so forth. But what is the point of all of that? What is the meaning? Why am I here in this body on this Earth at this time? The Queen of Wands reversed asks me to look within and endeavor to answer that question for myself, listening to the calling of my soul.

One reason I’m interpreting this card as being all about me, and not a theme of being influenced by people coming into my life who are Queen of Wands types, is the reversal. My wife is such a Queen of Wands, and this reversal says to me, “Hey, this year isn’t about Kristen and what she wants and what she is doing. This year is about you and your connection to what lights you up inside.” So often, Kristen and my own desires, needs, and wants overlap, so there is some murkiness is separating out my own voice clearly from all those ambitions. And, of course, there are many things I want for Kristen and helping her lights up my little heart. Overall, the theme for 2018 is about my own passions in life and feeling like I’m connected to my higher purpose.

My greatest obstacle in 2018: Page of Wands reversed
My greatest obstacle is getting stuck in Page of Wands exploration and not progressing to Queen of Wands mastery. I shall not be immature and miss my growth! Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing bad about Page of Wands energy, but it is less developed and in control than Queen of Wands energy. The Page is about new beginnings, but I’ve already come so far on my journey of internal discovery and exploration. I don’t want to stay in that phase of “just figuring things out”. I want to take what I have learned and get to the next level of development.

Leveling up is difficult work. It requires belief, trust, and holding onto a vision of myself that is, as yet, unrealized. The Page of Wands wants to distract me with new ideas, tangents or run away creative pursuits that are far afield from my objectives. The Page sees something shiny and amazing and wanders off in wonder. That can’t be me this year. I know so much already that I can process and synthesize in order to transform to a higher level of my conscious development. I am in the middle of this transformative energy, which is a challenging place to be. It’s not a comfortable place, it’s not a glamorous place. It lacks the pizazz of a new beginning that the Page of Wands loves, but I will stay the course this year knowing that distractions will abound.

Those distractions could also take the form of messages from the outside world. Pages often represent messengers and we all know what it feels like to be inundated with outside messages that conflict with or contradict our inner guidance. This year I must be wary and questioning of information and news from the environment around me. Oftentimes, I take information at face value, as factual and true, and that can be damaging or hurtful. Truth is subjective to our individual experience and interpretation. On my inner journey of self development, I will not be distracted or dismayed by messengers trying to block or rewind my progress. When we grow, we also outgrow, and that can include no longer running with the same crowd, following the same news outlets, or believing in the same spiritual constructs.

My greatest support in 2018: Knight of Pentacles
The Knight of Pentacles is my rock in the year ahead. He gently reminds me to, “Just keep going, plod, plod, plod along with unceasing dedication and devotion to the goal.” There is a grounded belief in success due to prolonged effort embedded  within this Knight’s aura. He is serious and calm. I will not be distracted from my purpose. I will not get hot-headed or overemotional above my challenges, successes, and failure. His energy doesn’t quit when faced with setbacks or hardships or a long bumpy road. It’s just one foot in front of the other. The the only way to make progress is to keep trying and keep taking steps along my path. I am guided by the Knight of Pentacles with his steadfast and dedicated energy.

A lot of the steps probably aren’t going to be particularly glamorous or awe-inspiring, but they will be rewarding and deeply gratifying in my body. One of my major goals for 2018 is centered around a healthy body, so this Knight gives me support in the area of health. He is also a harbinger of financial security, so he gives me a little pep in my step that I won’t be worrying greatly about finances in the year ahead. The Knight of Pentacles is also a symbol of a solid relationship with a steady partner- also great news. Taking my mind off health concerns, money matters, and relationship upheavals gives me more head space for self-development and consciousness raising. I want to delve into the meaning of my existence, not the everyday drama of my life situation.

I am not much of an Earth energy person, so if you’re following along that means I’m mostly a Water and Air energy person. Water and Air are the feminine elements, associated with being and intuition. Fire and Water are the masculine elements representing action and practicality. The first trilogy of cards in this reading all have this masculine, action-oriented vibe about them, but I’m writing about an internal development of raising my consciousness to align with my higher purpose. I like the idea of applying active and practical energy to an internal process. I’m not going to feel my way towards this or think my way into an understanding. I’m going to do things this year to answer this calling. I will seek out meditation groups, consciousness classes, books and podcasts about self-development, etc. I’m exciting to be doing something about my questions and quest for my higher calling this year.

I see these first three court cards as different aspects of my own personality. We all hold the potential for each of the personality types that the court cards represent, just like we all hold all the signs of the zodiac within our charts. The Queen of Wands reversed advises me to go on in an internal journey of self-discovery leading towards the raising of my consciousness and seeking my higher purpose. The Pages of Wands reversed reminds me not to be distracted by messages and opportunities that are unrelated to my purpose and only slow my progress. The Knight of Pentacles is my rock who is on a slow roll ever forward without falter, no matter how minuscule my progress or difficult the journey.

Message from Fire: VIII of Cups reversed
The dominant element in this reading is Fire with total of three cards from the Fire suit of Wands. The card I drew for as a message from Fire is Water card, though. Go figure! Water is associated with the emotional realm, and being a rather Watery person myself, I hear the VIII of Cups reversed a message to walk away from old ideas of “who I am”. Just because my Sun and rising sign are in Water signs does not mean I have to be emotional about everything. I contain multitudes of personalities and choices. I can decide to leave an old identity in the past if it no longer fits with who I really am. The personality, the identity, the ego, these are all words for the armor we use to hide or protect our true selves from the world. When we take away our armor, we reveal the shining light that is our essence, our core, our soul.

The VIII of Cups reminds me that it can be difficult to leave the ego behind. I have so carefully constructed the fortress of my personality to make me feel safe and special. When I shed that, or transform that, I am walking into the unknown. The mystery of what is possible for me is terrifying and makes me want to scramble back into the shell of my old self. Growth requires risk and getting out of my comfort zone. It is scary, but is so worth it. I have to keep reminding myself that I want the unknown, I want growth, I don’t want or have to be like I am now. I am expansive and limitless.

The VIII of Cups reversed is an excellent indication of change in the realm of Fire, representing creativity, passion, and spirituality. The reversal says that this change will come from within, a shift in emotional capacity, emotional intelligence, or emotional perspective is needed. It is time for me to take a journey, mostly metaphysically, but also travel is a loved and needed way for me to expand. This year I already have plans to travel to New Orleans, Walla Walla, and Nicaragua. These types of trips open my heart and mind so much. It is time for me to take a leap forward, to develop a new way of being, and go on a spiritual journey. Here I go!

Message from Earth: VII of Cups
The practical, grounded realm of Earth reminds me that there are always evaluations, options, and choices to make in life. The challenge of the VII of Cups is to decipher which opportunities are real and which are illusions. It isn’t always easy to emotionally distance or untangle myself from any given situation. I often lead with my heart and ask myself, “How does this make me feel? If I did this instead, how would that make me feel?” My emotions can be wildly inaccurate and lead me astray. Earth nudges me to examine this practice and perhaps shy away from it a little bit in the year ahead. I may benefit from a more balanced approach, rather than leaning too heavily upon my emotions.

The VII cards are also about a turning point or a transition. When faced with the multitude of options that lie before me, I can shatter the illusion of overwhelming choice, recognize my chosen path and more forward with clarity. It is time to make dreams, hopes, and wishes into reality instead of pie in the sky aspirations. Earth lets me know that I need to do the work. I must take action instead of just sitting around wishing. I know what my wishes are, it’s time to bring in the how of accomplishing them.

Earth energy is about the practical elements of our lives, like work, health, and home. The VII of Cups, representing, possibility and choices, may cause me to think, “Oh, there are many ways to be healthy,” but in reality, the only way to be healthy is to eat right and exercise. I will do that. The VII of Cups may say, “Oh, you’ll find a great new apartment, there are tons of them.” Actually, there may be few that meet my needs so I better be proactive about getting there to rent the dream home before someone else shows up and nabs it. The VII of Cups could say, “Financial security can mean different things to different people.” Sure, it can, but I only need to define it for myself and then make sure my income covers all my expenses and savings plans. It’s time to break through illusions of choice and just get on with the work already.

Message from Water: VI of Wands reversed
My 2018 message from Water is the VI of Wands reversed. I love how I got a Fire card as a message from Water and a Water card as a message from Fire. I seek balance and wholeness and this type of reading makes me smile. The VI of Wands reversed brings a message of internal triumph and victory. Generally, with a reversed VI of Wands I might warn that victory is far off, but the slant of the reading makes me write that victory will be known from within, perhaps with very little to no external recognition. I will feel an inspired sense of accomplishment and achievement surrounding the theme of raising my vibe and being more conscious this year. The VI is not an end point, but hurdles will be overcome and progress will be made.

The VI of Wands is often about being recognized and honored for your achievements. Reversed, I may find myself without any input from those around me or my external life situation to indicate that I’m doing much of anything to applaud. That is something that I will have to deal with as it happens. Will I feel unappreciated? unrecognized? let down? disappointed? I can’t count on the world around me to give me the messages of winning that I may hope for or deserve. I can be okay with that. I love meeting my own expectations and praising my own efforts. I can design and implement ways to recognize myself for my achievements so that I feel buoyed and joyful about the work I’m doing inside. This type of self admiration will meet my emotional needs for acknowledgment and praise.

Another aspect of this internal journey that I am on is a feeling of isolation. I may not be able to share my experiences and progress with those around me. People may tire of hearing what a great job I’m doing on my personal quest for self-development. People most like to talk about themselves and may become defensive or upset if I am on a rampage of talking about how great I am doing. I am a relatively private person in the first place, but this still sounds like a recipe for aloofness and extreme isolation. Water advises me to find like-hearted people who are also doing super well and following their soul path. I can strike a gentle balance with those closest to me, allowing them in on my journey without feeling judged that they are doing something less worthwhile with their time and energy.

Message from Air: The Lovers
Lastly, The Lovers is my message from Air and this is indeed an Air card, so the only element that matched up in this reading and the only Major Arcana card in this reading. Very interesting. Who doesn’t love The Lovers card? It speaks of love, personal values, beliefs systems, and unification. It sighs with contentment that I will be able to express my views and values with clarity and empathy this year. That is a relief after the potential humble brags denoted by the VI of Wands earlier in this reading. The Lovers tells me that I will be mentally attuned to my values and beliefs this year and be able to clearly understand and articulate my thoughts. I like that!

The Major Arcana factors gives a bit more significance to this card in the reading. Perhaps there is some gift I am meant to share in the realm of Air or it could indicate a big lesson I am ready to learn. Air represents the realm of the mind and communication, so The Lovers can signify an enhanced ability to connect on a mental level with myself and others, sharing my personal values and outlook on life and meaning. I can use these connections I am able to form to create friendships and deepen the relationships that I already have. One of my goals for 2018 is to make more friends, so finding people who share my values is something I am ready to pursue and can aptly communicate.

The Lovers can also indicate change and transition, making decisions that align with my true values and core essence in order to live my best life. There are many cards of change in this reading, which is something that I embrace and actually look forward to experiencing in 2018. At first glance, I wasn’t especially hyped on the cards I drew for 2018. I got two VIs, a VII, and VIII, which is a fun little run, but not beginning cards or ending cards which bring an edge of excitement to a reading. These high numbers indicate a continuation of lessons or explorations already undertaken but not yet complete. The same can be said for the three Court Cards which show development and areas to focus on for change within my personality and how I present myself to the world. I’ve really enjoyed exploring these cards more in depth and creating a story for my year that is a bit more interesting than my initial reaction to this draw.

If you are interested in having a 2018 reading with this spread, I’ll be offering it in my email readings selections. If you happen to be in Nashville, we could set up an in-person reading if you prefer. I’m wishing you clarity and vision for 2018!

Reflections on 2017, Hopes for 2018

Hi! Welcome to my latest contribution to the Tarot Blog Hop. This time around, a collection of tarot bloggers are all writing about the following topic:

“…before you fling yourself headlong into the spirit of seasonal over-indulgence, take a moment to reflect on what this year has brought you and what you wish for the next year to bring. Which card(s) best represent or celebrate your past year and which best represent your wishes for the year ahead. You can either select the cards you think fit best, or draw them randomly and see what the Tarot thinks.”

I decided to pick my cards intentionally. I went through my Rider Waite Smith tarot deck and on the first time through I set aside about half the cards!  Yes, 2017, like most years, had it’s ups and downs and most of the themes of human experience represented in the tarot cards came up for me at some point last year. Here I narrowed it down though, into three groups, or categories of sorts, to sum up the major themes of 2017 for me.

This first group of cards I chose because I got married in 2017!  II of Cups, The Lovers, X of Cups, IV of Wands, and the IX of Cups all speak to me of love, relationship, commitment, family, celebration, and dreams coming true. I love the color and vibrancy of these cards, as they remind me of all the joy and happiness that I found in 2017. Relationships are important to me in this lifetime so being able to find a romantic relationship that I want to commit to for the rest of my life is amazing for me. This group of cards reminds me of all my blessings and all the light that filled my life throughout 2017. It was truly a joyful year!

This next group of cards is all about the work I’ve done in the area of self development in 2017. The VIII of Pentacles, Temperance, II of Wands, VII of Pentacles and The Magician remind me of positive change I have enacted or begun in 2017 This year I’ve done a good deal of reflecting on what is important to me and working to align my actions with those values that I’m uncovering. I’m also putting a lot of effort into changing my perspective and upleveling my mindset. I have a lot of limiting beliefs about what I am capable of, who I am, abundance, balance, and possibility. I am a badass manifestor with big dreams that are possible and available to me. These cards support these positive beliefs and make me feel like anything is possible.

This last collection of cards represents the other side of being a badass manifestor, all the things I confronted in 2017 and am striving to work with or overcome. The VIII of Swords, The Devil, II of Swords, IX of Swords, and IX of Wands. These represent issues of doubt, anxiety, overindulgence, indecision, mental barriers, overwhelm, and fatigue. Most of the trouble and blockage in my life revolves around self created limitations of my mind. I’ve learned and explored these issues in 2017, and am still learning about them now.

I chose just three cards to signify my hopes and dreams for the coming year: Strength, The High Priestess, and The Fool. These Major Arcana cards represent themes I would like to embody or experiences I would like to have in 2018.

Strength is my chosen word of the year for 2018. I chose this card/word for a number of reasons, but the biggest reason is that this word just felt right! I was making a long list of possible words of the year for 2018, just free associating, and when Strength came up, I just knew it was my word. I realized that this is my tarot birth card, and on my birthday this year, I will also be entering a Strength year. Synchronicity! I also have a goal to get in shape in 2018, which is the physical manifestation of Strength. I strongly associate with the inner Strength represented by this card. It follows along the same lines of self development that I have been exploring in 2017. I think a mindset of Strength, both internal and physical, clearly tells the Universe what my intention is for my year ahead.

I chose The Fool for similar reasons. I want a fresh start, fresh energy, and a fresh mindset. The Fool isn’t bogged down by preconceptions, past failures, or fear. The Fool is ready to take a leap of faith and be spontaneous, follow her dreams, and dream big at that.

Lastly, I chose The High Priestess because is the ultimate tarot reader! To me, The High Priestess means intuition, calm inner center, connection to Source, the feminine, being over doing, and knowledge of self and inner values. I didn’t devote as much time to learning and practicing tarot, or involving myself in other spiritual pursuits in 2017. That’s something I want to amend in 2018. The High Priestess reminds me of that commitment to my spiritual development and to spending time doing one of the things I love best, offering guidance and inspiration through the tarot to those who are looking for that.

Expanding with the Sagittarius New Moon, December 18, 2017

It’s a beautiful day for a New Moon! Well, depending on where you are, the New Moon might be on the 17th or 18th. Here in Nashville it’s at 12:30am on the 18th, but I’m just gonna go ahead and post this on the 17th because it’s written! In my opinion, the New Moon window of activating those intentions of yours for the coming month includes the day before, day of, and day after the New Moon. I mean, we can’t always do it all in one day so it’s good to have some leniency in your life, right? Ease into it, let the New Moon energy take you through a couple of days of intentional focus.

This time around we encounter the New Moon’s intention setting energy backed by the expansive vibes of Sagittarius. The Sun is also in Sagittarius right now, as well as the planet Saturn. That’s a lot of Sag energy for us to work with. Let’s all spend the day contemplating our own personal philosophy of the meaning of life. Imagine what you want to do with your life, where you want to go, what you want to learn. Do the values you hold that make up your life philosophy support and align with what actions you are taking in your life? I hope so! If not, it’s a wonderful time to make some changes and get your dreams and your actions on the same page. I asked the tarot for some guidance and advice at this New Moon and here is what I came up!

Linestrider Tarot: The Star reversed, III of Cups, VII of Pentacles

Which area of my life should I focus on now in order to best increase and support expansion? The Star reversed

Ah, The Star, what a beautiful card, what a beautiful energy. It tells us to focus on hope, faith, light, and possibility. The Star is the light at the end of the tunnel when you feel like you’ve been through great difficulty and darkness but finally see a way back to optimism, solutions, positivity, and the belief that there is goodness and light in the Universe. The reversal I see as a need to focus on the internal. This light and hope is something that comes from inside of you. You do not need to look for The Star externally, in the world around you, but rather shine that eternal light from within yourself.

The Star also reminds us to let go of hurt, regret, negativity, grudges, pain, and a way of looking at things that exacerbates damage and burdens. The Law of Attraction advises us to focus on what we want to create more of in our lives. When we obsess about the negative, we inadvertently tell the Universe to bring us more of that since we are so set on dwelling in that energy. When we focus on all the positive and wonderful things about ourselves and who we are and the light we bring, we get into a place of gratitude that allows us to bring more and more of those blessings into the world with the backing of the Universe.

Bottom line: Focus on the bright light shining within you, full of hope and inspiration, and that will be the beauty that you grow and expand in this Moon cycle.

Where am I cutting off expansion because of limiting thoughts about what is possible?    III of Cups

This III of Cups reminds me of an area of my life where I feel like possibilities are a bit stagnant- friendships and emotional connections with people. Perhaps you can relate to feeling like it new friendships don’t come easily. I moved to Nashville two years ago and I still haven’t really made any friends, no one I call to meet for coffee or share long conversations with about the things that really matter to me. I listen to ideas about how it is difficult to make friends as an adult, as if easy and natural friendships are the domain of youth alone. That seems super limiting to me, don’t you think? I don’t see any reason to hold that as my truth. That mindset certainly does serve me anything good. Perhaps during this moon cycle, you too can focus on and expand the friendships zone of your life. Use the Star as a talisman or focal point for that positivity. You can shine, just as you are, attracting friends, deepening connections and and  the life you want to live.

What is the meaning of my life?VII of Pentacles

So what does life mean? I’m not sure that’s the most fair question to ask a tarot deck and I certainly wouldn’t choose the VII of Pentacles as the meaning of life. It doesn’t yell a definitive answer or tell me very much at all right at first glance. Life is about growth and reflection. Life is about wondering and trying and thinking about it again and then trying some more. It’s about putting in a long-term, intense effort and never really knowing if all that trying was really the “right thing” to do.

I do like the idea of Pentacles being involved in the meaning of life, because I think the body and the Earth are very important; they are integral to why we are here. I believe our souls chose our bodies and chose to be on Earth at this historical moment. There are other worlds and other forms of being, but I chose to be here now in this body and time. The lessons of this life are the ones I am meant to learn. There is no struggle in that. There is no wondering why. There is just surrender and acceptance in the knowledge that “good” or “bad” experiences, this life is why I am here. The VII of Pentacles is all about the long haul, pacing yourself, and allowing things to develop as you go. Plant the seeds you want to see sown and you’ll be in a much better place than trying to grow something but planting nothing at all.

Bottom line: Build a big beautiful nest of your life to show your abundance, gratitude, and your positive mindset even if you don’t know why you’re doing it.

You can use your cards to ask the same questions  as a tarot spread or I’m happy to do a personalized reading just for you 🙂  As you can see above, I decided to ask what the meaning of my life is today! This is not something I’ve asked the tarot before and I thought- why not?!  Have you ever asked the tarot what the meaning of life is? Did you get a good response? Lots of love and light to you at this dark period of the Moon. Go set those intentions to make it an awesome month ahead  😉

Deep Dives into the Scorpio New Moon, November 18, 2017

The New Moon is the best time of the month to get in touch with the astrological energy supporting intention setting for your next four weeks. This New Moon in Scorpio encourages you to dive deep into your subconscious, your watery emotional realm, your most heartfelt desires and focus on self development and personal mastery. This is a wonderful time to confront your addictions or other bad habits and make positive changes towards the life you want. Scorpio asks you to question and examine what is motivating your excesses and bad behaviors. What is missing from your life? What do you need to let go of? How can you facilitate this transformation? This is the process of death and rebirth that is so strongly connected with the energy of Scorpio. Do not be afraid to really get to the bottom of things and do some soul searching. It’s worth diving into your shadow in order to move forward into the light as a fuller version of yourself.

Below are three questions for you to ask the tarot at this Scorpio New Moon. I used the Mary-el Tarot to do an example reading for myself, and perhaps it will help you access your subconscious at this time as well. The Mary-el Tarot is beautiful and strange, and doesn’t read for me like other decks. I rely heavily upon the book of interpretations that Marie White includes with her deck in my reading here:

Mary El Tarot: IX of Wands, Page of Wands, X of Swords

What is unseen that needs to come to the surface?- IX of Wands
Creative Fire energy and the Free Will to create whatever my destiny prescribes are represented here by the lion and the woman in the card image, respectively. The lion is wild, untamed, passionate, creative, transformative, and intense. It is me without the armor of my personality and societal influences which keep me humble and in check. This fire lies beneath the surface of my conscious self that I present to the world. I can use my free will to access this fire and use it to create my future, though. I am limitless and unrestrained as long as I acknowledge that I am not a victim of circumstance. I can be whatever I want to be. Just because I don’t have something, doesn’t mean I can’t get it. Just because I have never done something, doesn’t mean I can’t do it now. I learn through my trials and errors and can continuously reinvent and reimagine who and what I am. Now, with the help of the Scorpio New Moon, I can dig deep to get in touch with my creative side, my inner fire, and bring my wild side into the light. There is no reason to be restrained and under control when we can each burn as bright as the sun, brilliant and genius in our life creations.

What emotional burdens, old habits or beliefs do I need to let die, let go of, clear away?- Page of Wands
It is time for me to accept that I have faith and strong beliefs and move onto using those strengths. I have a tendency towards nihilism, a willingness to feel that life has no meaning. This is reactionary behavior though, as it isn’t that I truly believe that life has no purpose, but rather that that purpose in unknowable. Faced with the idea that I may never consciously understand the purpose of my life, I reject meaning all together. Deep down I do believe and have a strong faith that my life, and life in general, has meaning. There is a reason that this all happening. It just makes me so tired to go over and over in my mind that I don’t know what that meaning is. This Page of Wands asks me to get out of my head, to move away from my thoughts, and just listen to my soul’s calling. My soul does call me to me, I can simply listen and accept, instead of going back into my mind to analyze and despair over mental failings of understanding. This life is not to be understood in words and numbers, it is to be known in the depth of my soul. Now is the time to set aside the old habits of thinking and the burden of needing logical explanations.

How can I prepare for rebirth and set the stage for growth?- X of Swords
“The ego is the eternal limited by words.” Here I set the stage for growth by living the message from the Page of Wands: it is time to break free of the prison of my thoughts. The Swords represent the mental realm and all the energy I’ve been expending upon thinking and living in my thoughts. I have built up my self image there, my ego is wrapped up in my mind, I create and protect this image of myself with words and my attachment to my intelligence. The X represents an ending, but also a beginning. It contains both 10 and 1. It is the space in between, where I ready myself for transformation. I’m preparing for a way of being that includes silence and trust, instead of constant words and doubts. We each create our lives by the limits of our mindsets. What if we each adopted a mindset of limitlessness? What if we didn’t draw conclusions based on fear and anxiety? What if we let anything be possible? The image of the X of Swords is Scorpio, is Death, coming to sweep away old ways of thinking and create an open space for limitlessness.

I loved doing this little reading for myself this morning of the New Moon. The Mary El tarot just blows my mind every time I do with a reading with it. If you’re interested in receiving an email reading for your own New Moon energy and intention setting, please get in touch. Happiest of New Moons to you!

Find Love Through Balance with the New Moon in Libra, October 19th, 2017

It’s that magical time of month again- New Moon time! The New Moon, this month in the sign of Libra, is a wonderful time for setting intentions on what you want to grow, create, accomplish, or manifest in the coming four weeks. It can be helpful to develop those intentions with the energy of the Moon’s current sign. So in what areas of life does Libra help support us this month? I chose three Libra strengths to set intentions around: love and all relationships, finding balance, and being diplomatic and fair. Then I asked the tarot to give us some advice around these Libra themes to help us in our intention setting time.

Give the below tarot advice a read through and then take a moment to sit back and come up with your intentions for the month. Try to pick just a few intentions in order to put maximum manifestation power behind those intentions. The more honed in and focused your are on your intention, the better your results will be.

Rider Waite Smith tarot deck: Death reversed, The World reversed, The Fool reversed

What will help you appreciate and improve your relationships and be loyal, supportive, and committed to the people you love?- Death reversed
You have to let go of the past in order to make room in your heart for what you truly want out of your relationships. So often we repeat relationships patterns over and over again. We choose variations of lovers and friends who we haven’t had successful or positive relationships with and we repeat those relationship patterns with each new partner. This obviously leads to similar results and outcomes with new relationships. You’ve got to let this go! Let the past go! Try something completely different and see how getting out of your comfort zone can be scary but oh, so rewarding. Don’t be afraid of change. Instead, embrace change as your ultimate best source of happiness and fulfillment. Change is how we grow, develop, and reach that next level. Let this New Moon signal a transition away from unhealthy past relationships (and this includes your relationship with yourself), towards more fulfilling and positive relationships in your present.

Intention: I set the intention to clear away past relationships that I cling to out of fear of change. I am open to change, releasing my comfort zone in order to find loving and fulfilling relationships.

How and when can you be more diplomatic and fair-minded?The World reversed
Carrying on with the theme of letting go, closure, and moving on, The World invites us to use this New Moon to find internal completion. Now we must go through the process of ending or finishing a phase of life. This process can’t be rushed. There are no short cuts here. We must go through all the effort, mess, and unease of figuring out what happened, how we feel about it, what it might have meant, and then putting it behind us. This is tough work, but it is so necessary. What is blocking you or holding you back from closure? Hash out what feels unfair or unjust. Speak your truth, even if it is just to yourself, because you need to do this for yourself above all others. There may be no way to achieve a feeling of fairness and even the score, but that’s not the point. The point is to reach a place of peace in your heart. The world is an unfair place, there’s no rule or reason to much of what happens in our lives, but there is a chance for acceptance and space to move on.

Intention: I set the intention to learn from my past, accept my present moment, and allow for hope and change in the future. Unfair or unjust things may happen in my life, and even though I do no know what the reason or lesson is of those events, that do no define me.

What area of your life needs attention in order to foster balance and harmony in your life?- The Fool reversed
Being dedicated to closure and letting go of the past is your wonderful strength right now, yet there is a still a need to balance out all the ending energy with a hope and faith for a new beginning. You do not have to focus solely on the past. There is still room for positivity and optimism about the next big thing coming your way. Foster a sense of possibility and openness to what the Universe has to offer you as you deal with your past. Ready yourself for a risk, for a leap of faith into a bright new future. Trust that you will succeed. Act as if there is no such thing as failure and believe in yourself 100%. You are not quite ready to take that leap as you shake old patterns and transition into a new mindset, but a big part of creating that new mindset is a bright belief that a new day is upon you and anything is possible. Hold that candle of hope and joy inside of you. Bring balance to your life by admiring and tending to that new light, even as you extinguish the last flames of an older light. This transition time is beautiful, miserable, necessary, and wonderful.

Intention: I set the intention to balance my energy between clearing away what no longer serves me from the past and opening up to what is possible in my present moment. I ready myself for a leap of faith into a bright future.

Happy New Moon in Libra!
